Hypnagogic Hallucinations

Hypnagogic hallucination is the term which is used to define the state of mind when a person sees or hears things when he or she’s asleep. Most of the times these dreams are quite frightening which stimulate the person with fear, a sudden arousal or a jerk just before he or she’s about to sleep. For instance, many people dream of falling from height and suddenly wake up with a jerk. Although you tend to associate it with a dream but the environment is actually a hallucination. Situations like lack of sleep, illness or overdose of medicines, erratic sleep schedules can cause hypnagogic hallucinations.

These hallucinations usually take place at the horizon of sleepiness and waking. They usually occur when a person is either about to fall asleep or is about to wake up. These hallucinations are quite vivid and are not very clear to the person. Although many of us experience such hallucinations once or twice in our lifetimes but if these hallucinations occur frequently, they can certainly target at being an illness which needs to be treated medically.

Some of the common situations which are seen as the hallucinations are falling from height when the person suddenly wakes up with a jerk to avoid hitting the ground or situations when the person can actually hear people talking around him or her, the feeling of someone’s presence in the room, a feeling that the person is submerged in a water body, etc are all experienced by many people undergoing the symptoms of hypnagogic hallucinations. However, these hallucinations can be really frightening for many people experiencing them.

Why these hypnagogic hallucinations are caused still remains to be a topic of debate. It is most common with people having sleep disorders but it can also take place as an effect of overdose of any medicine. Thus one must see a doctor if he or she experiences such hallucinations.
