Suffering from water edema? There are a few things you need to understand about how our bodies work in order for you to understand this condition and, ultimately, learn what you can do to try to get rid of any excess water from your system.
Firstly, the importance of water to our bodies cannot ever be under emphasized. Without plenty of good clean fresh water – if we fail to drink at least eight glasses of water daily, the bare minimum – we would soon become comatose and die. This is because water plays such a vital part in how our bodies functions that we cannot do without a constant supply of it – water is constantly moving out of our systems even while we sleep, it is exhaled as water vapor all the time. Water is an important part of our blood, helps us carry nutrients all around the body, and waste materials to the colon and out of it. Excess fluids such as these collect in open spaces in our tissues and make certain parts of our bodies swell. In extreme cases a person’s entire body may be filled with water, even the lungs. However, in the majority of cases it is the legs and lower extremities that swell thanks to water accumulation, because they are most susceptible to such thanks to gravity’s action on the fluids. This fluid accumulation in some cases may be due to severe causes such as organ failure – heart failure or liver failure for instance. Or it can take place thanks to less worrisome causes such as staying immobile for too long (and not being able to urinate), for instance.
Whatever the cause, those suffering from water retention can avail of medicines that can help deal with bloating and eliminate the excess water from the system. Calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and Pepto-Bismol are three over-the-counter medicines that can help deal with water bloating. There are also natural treatments that can be used to help, too, such as herbal diuretic teas, which make use of powerful natural diuretics such as nettle and golden seal, to help induce urination. Caffeine is a diuretic substance that can also help to get people to urinate more and bring out more water from their systems; it is present in coffee and tea, although certain types of tea contain more of it than others. The herbal remedies may be more efficient than caffeine, though, and may have fewer side effects as well.
Lastly, it can also help to exercise more. Engaging in more frequent exercise can increase the metabolism, improve circulation and increase sweat rates too.
