How to Save Yourself from Hypertension

Hypertension is the number one cause of heart attacks, heart failure, kidney failure, and strokes. Yet there are millions of Americans walking around with high blood pressure, or hypertension, and they do not even know it. They do not know it because they have not had it checked. These unsuspecting people do not feel bad. As a matter of fact, they feel just fine. They have no symptoms, and yet they are heart attacks and strokes just looking for a place to happen.

Sadly, too many people find out that they have high blood pressure, or hypertension, when they wake up in the emergency room after a heart attack or a stroke has happened. Some of them do not wake up.

High blood pressure can be treated. It can not be cured, but it can be controlled. That control is as simple as making a few simple lifestyle changes and taking a tiny little pill everyday. But the fact is that prevention is always a lot better than treatment. Treatment means you have a problem, and prevention means that you are doing everything within your power to avoid the problem.

The first and most important thing that you can do is to have it checked, and to do so on a regular basis. You can also lose those extra pounds that you are carrying around, get more exercise, lay off the fast, processed, and convenience foods, and cut down on your salt intake. Oh, yes – you can also quit smoking.

Living a healthy lifestyle, following a healthy diet, and getting plenty of aerobic exercise is not a guarantee that you will not develop high blood pressure, but it will at the very least postpone it.
