Does this sound familiar? You have a big night out in a few days and suddenly you feel that tell-tale ‘tingling’ on you lips. Aaaargh! Not a cold sore! Now it’s a downhill trip. First the blisters appear lovingly followed by the ugly scabs.
What is a cold sore? It’s a common illness caused by the herpes simplex virus. Is it contagious? You bet! Its transmitted by close personal contact, so smooching is out of the question while you have the lesion. More than 80 percent of the population have the herpes simplex virus antibodies in their system!
What do you do? Crawl under a rock and hide? Remove all mirrors from your house and work? Why not wear an elastoplast… a really, really big elastoplast! Your self esteem takes a hammering. And guess what… you’ve got 7 – 10 days of this torture to go.
So…How to get rid of cold sores…
- You could try over the counter medication. These work ok, but you need to start them as soon as you feel the ‘tingling’
- You could try some home remedies. Slice a tomato and rub it on the sore – I’ve tried this and it has worked, but the cold sores came back.
- Apply petroleum jelly.
- Take zinc tablets.
- Rub on tea tree oil or even ordinary tea bags.
- Rub aloe vera on the lesion to dry it out.
I have tried some of the above remedies, and some worked, but the lesions reappeared again and again.
