I have my CDL what do I do now?
So you have taken all your practice tests and passed your CDL tests. You are only half way done. You still have to find a job. There are many jobs available. You could drive over the road from state to state, you could drive a delivery truck and stay within 20 miles of your home, or you could drive a portable toilet truck. It all depends on your circumstances and what you are willing to do.
Evaluate your options.
You can either drive over the road or drive locally. Over the road driver’s usually make somewhere between $35,000 and $45,000 a year. The only bad thing is you will be away from home for weeks at a time. The pay is pretty good and the job is secure.
Local drivers usually make less than over the road drivers, but they get to go home every night. Most local drivers are class B drivers. These drivers usually drive box trucks and buses. The pay is usually between $30,000 and $35,000 for a basic local truck driving job.
Not all local drivers make less money than over the road drivers. Some local drivers work for oil waste recovery companies and make make $55,000 a year. These drivers have their hazardous materials endorsement and go through recurring hazardous materials training. Another specialty niche where drivers can make good money and stay near home is in the septic industry. These drivers have class b licenses and are trained to locate and pump out septic tanks.
It all depends on what you want to do.
Are you willing to do more than just drive, but also provide a service? Drivers that provide a special service on top of driving are the ones that make the real money, but the work is harder. If you are single over the road driving maybe your best bet. You can have a steady job and work for a big company.
