Seafood, Meat and Poultry : Meats are naturally lower in their carbohydrates content unless they are full of additives. It is good to avoid the consumption of excess fats; so it is better to look for low fat beef, turkey, pork, duck, chicken, fish, sardines, lobster, shrimp, scallops and crab. One must stay away from processed and canned foods, stuffed meats, sausages and deli meats. If you want to buy steak, you must choose the leanest cut to avoid loading your diet with fats.
Green Vegetables: Buy loads of leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, bok choy, lettuce, cabbage, watercress and dandelion. Buy fresh vegetables as much as possible. Although most frozen vegetables carry the nutrients but it is better to avoid the ones with sauces. The sauces are mostly high in carbohydrates and sugar content.
Other Vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, celery, cauliflower, cucumbers, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, kelp and eggplant are jam-packed with nutrients and are low in carbohydrates. Potatoes and carrots are loaded with carbohydrates so they must be avoided.
Herbs, Sprouts and Mushrooms: Add clover, alfalfa, garlic, onion, thyme, oregano, basil and different types of mushroom in your grocery list. These herbs are best for controlling the spikes in blood sugar level of diabetics.
Seeds and Nuts: Several nuts are low in their carbohydrates content. Walnuts, peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, cashew, pine nuts and pumpkin seeds are healthy for diabetics.
Fruits: The lowest carbohydrates containing fruits are blueberries, apples, cherries, strawberries, apples, oranges, pineapple, grapes, avocado and peaches. Lemon and other citrus fruits are also good.
