Eyelid Eczema

Eyelid Eczema is a problem characterized by scaling, erythema and edema associated with burning and pruritus caused by irritants and allergens in the atmosphere. This is because the skin near and around the eyes is thin and sensitive hence vulnerable to allergens and irritants. Other causes may be hypersensitivity to environmental allergens like the dust, mold and Seborrheic Dermatitis. This Eczema bears devastating effects and its treatment is very hard. When eczema starts spreading to the eyelids, the condition is hardly bearable as it is associated with itching and pain.

Common symptoms of Eyelid Eczema are itchy, inflamed and scaly skin. Adults may experience too dry skin whereas children may experience weepy eyes. Mild Eczema is characterized by small irritation while severe Eczema becomes unbearable leading to sleep disturbances. Prevention of the Eczema is highly encouraged. Some allergens are present in the air hence difficult to avoid. However, use of air-filters, allergen tight bedding and anti-allergen cleaning products may reduce presence of allergens.

Eyelid Eczema has a typical treatment comprised of a series of corticosteroids though their use has side effects like thinning of the skin or enlargement of the blood vessels. However, new advanced treatment do not possess such risks. The latest treatment is called immunomodulators which is safe to use in sensitive areas of the eyes. A patient suffering from the infection should avoid all possible irritants and allergens. He should avoid using cosmetics and skin products that may cause irritation to the eyes and also scratching and rubbing the eyes but instead use a moisturizer for relief. Finally, the patient should avoid stress at all costs and should therefore involve himself in healthy activities like yoga, meditation and other creative past times to reduce stress and enhance relaxation.
