Disk Cleanup

Disk cleanup is performed to cleanup temporary files facilitating the operating system to run smoothly.

Windows XP

Method 1.

  1. Click "Start" button
  2. Navigate to> All Programs> accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup.
  3. Select your Operating System Drive (Typically C:)
  4. Tick ​​all the boxes except for "Compress Files".
  5. Press OK.

Method 2.

  1. Click "Start" button
  2. Go to "My Computer".
  3. Right Click on Operating System Drive (Usually C:)
  4. Choose "Properties".
  5. Click on "Disk Cleanup"
  6. Tick ​​all the boxes except for "Compress Files".
  7. Press OK.

Windows Vista, Windows 7

Method 1.

  1. Click "Start" button
  2. Go to "My Computer".
  3. Right Click on Operating System Drive (Usually C:)
  4. Choose "Properties".
  5. Click on "Disk Cleanup"
  6. Tick ​​all the boxes except for "Compress Files".

Disk Defragmentation

Disk defragmentation rearranges the data on the hard disk in an orderly manner enabling the data fetching action to speedup.

Method 1:

  • Click 'Start'> All Programs> Accessories> System tool> Disk Defragmenter
  • Select the Local drive (commonly [C:])

Method2:

  • Double Click 'My Computer'> Right Click '(C:)'> Select 'Properties'> click on 'Tools'>
  • 'Defragment Now'
  • Select the Local drive (commonly [C:])

Error Checking

Error checker affects the structure of the file system and attempts to fix errors and recover bad sectors; corrupt data sectors on the harddisk.

Method:

  • Double Click 'My Computer'> Right Click on Local drive (commonly c:)> Select 'Properties'> Click on 'Tools'> press 'Check Now'
  • Tick ​​both boxes
  • Press 'Yes' when prompted with a popup message> Restart Computer
