Throughout our life, the body maintains a balance between bone loss and bone formation. Bone loss becomes a major part of the life of every woman after she reaches her menopause. The reason behind this loss of bone mass is due to the fact that in menopause- the ovaries stop producing the estrogen, which is necessary for keeping the bones strong.
It is often seen that this problem in women can increase rapidly during their perimenopause stage when the period becomes irregular and the estrogen level starts to drop rapidly. This can lead to serious medical conditions such as osteoporosis and osteopenia.
Therefore, it becomes absolutely necessary for women to take care of their bone health in the early part of their life so that they do not suffer from bone loss related diseases later on in life. The women who are especially prone to this problem are those who have a family history of osteoporosis and those who have thin or small frame. It has also been seen that women of Asian origin and those who are white have higher chances of getting affected by bone loss as an after effect of menopause. Those who have a history of taking steroids such as cortisone are also prone to this disease. It is also related to lifestyle and therefore, if you are smoking or drinking too much and have a diet that is low in calcium and Vitamin D, then you should be careful from now on. Otherwise it might lead to bone loss disease.
If you are in the age group of 65 and above or you are having irregular menstrual cycle, or you have your ovaries removed surgically, then also you might have the risk of suffering from this menopause related condition.
For preventing the bone loss you need to know beforehand, whether you are suffering from the disease. Visit your doctor and go through the DXA scan, which is a bone density test. This will give you the exact bone density of your body especially of those areas which are prone to this problem. The areas include spine, hip and forearms.
If you are a woman who is 65 or above in age should go for this test even if you are not suffering from any bone related disease. If you are a post menopausal woman who is Asian or white or take steroids or have lifestyle related problems, then also you need to go for the DXA scan. If you are a post menopausal woman with fractures then also you should go for the test.
