Boils Symptoms: Red Swelling Means Beware!

Itching, redness, tenderness and swelling: four signs that you may have a boil in the making. What are the exact boils symptoms and what can you do about them? Read on to find out.

Habitual sufferers of these painful, hot lumps know the signs:

1. A small swelling starts, slightly bigger than a grain of rice. This is almost always around a hair follicle.
2. The swelling turns red.
3. As the swelling begins to grow, it gets hot and itchy.
4. Gradually, the lump begins to fill with pus, dead blood cells and fluid, and it can grow as large as a fig.

Since these skin abscesses are related to hair follicles, they most often occur in places where hairs are in bacteria-friendly situations: where there is friction that creates an opening for bacteria, and where there is heat and warmth. Common locations include:
• The neck
• The buttocks
• Under the arm
• Along the inner thigh

Boils symptoms rapidly progress: the first 24 hours are all you have to start treatment. If you do not catch a boil early, you can expect the swelling and tenderness to increase, sometimes to a very large and extremely tender size. Once the abscess has taken root, you must wait for it to 'come to a head' and spontaneously burst.

The bacteria that is emitted is highly toxic. You need to be very careful to handle any pus with tissues and anti-bacterial creams. Do not squeeze or pinch the swelling on your own! That is the number one way the infection spreads. If you can not wait for it to burst on its own, go to your doctor to have it lanced or to have a cortisone injection to ease the pain.

The most common treatment is to apply a compress: a warm washcloth dipped in salt water is best. Hold it against the swollen area for 20 minutes, up to five times a day.

If you recognize the swelling and pain as common boils symptoms, you might be fortunate enough to take a homeopathic remedy such as purple cone flower, wild indigo and sulphur, to reduce the pain, itching, and swelling right away.

There are certain combinations of active ingredients that make homeopathic remedies effective. To learn which remedy I have found most effective against boils symptoms, visit my website.
