Ringworm Can Affect Anyone – Here’s Home Remedies

Ringworm doesn’t really care who it affects – you, your dogs, or your cats. And since it spreads easily, if you’ve got kids in school, you may find yourself treating it.

It’s not really a worm. It’s a fungal infection of the skin that usually shows up in humans as raised red patches with defined edges… looking like a worm curled under the skin. It doesn’t always look like a ring when it affects your pets, but it does make their hair break off over the affected area.

Ringworm can be transferred back and forth between pets and humans – pets and pets – or humans and humans. The fungal spores can live for a long time in the environment, so it’s important to do a good anti-fungal cleaning if your home has had it.

But – I promised some home remedies, not a lecture on house cleaning, so here they are. Use most several times a day.

1. Aloe Vera

2. Tea tree oil

3. Honey and olive oil in melted beeswax

4. Apple cider vinegar

5. Listerine mouthwash

6. The oregano herb – mix with olive oil

7. Epsom salt solution – soak once a day

8. Nail polish – if you use it on pets, make sure it’s dry before you turn them loose

9. Chewing tobacco – any wet tobacco. Use as a poultice and wrap it.

10. Diluted lime sulfur – one part to 16 to 32 parts water. Will stain!

11. Grapefruit seed extract

12. Raw papaya

13. Fresh garlic

14. Bleach – one part bleach to 6 parts water

15. Bag balm

16. Pure virgin coconut oil – also good for diaper rash!

Remember that everyone – pets and people alike – has a different system. Watch for allergic reactions and discontinue if they appear. Remember that allergies can take many forms – including headaches and muscle aches.

An Outdoor Landscape With Camellia Shrubs

An outdoor landscape with camellia shrubs will add color to your home and property during the winter months. Besides having those pretty flowers the camellia is an evergreen shrub with shiny green leaves that are very attractively even when the shrub is not in full bloom.

If your live in the warm climate areas, Jauary is the time you will find them in the nurseries and home and garden centers; they will probably be blooming and this is the time to plant them around your outdoor landscape. Once you see the color and shape of the blooms should help you decide which ones to purchase and will have a good idea as to where to plant them. Planting camellias while they are blooming is the best time before the new growth appears.

Most of the camellia varieties should be planted where they will receive filtered sun, except for the camellia sasanqua which endures the full sun. If your outdoor landscape is shy of partial shade you can plant them in containers that can be moved around your patio or deck. Their planting area should also be protected from strong winds. Too much sun can cause them to suffer from scald, which means the leaves look very yellow instead of the shiny deep green. They can also be planted in the shaded areas of tall trees. They will liven up any shaded corner and make beautiful hedges.

The camellia flower colors are available in of white, pink, red, or a combo of colors. The flowers of the camellia shrub have a lasting quality even after they have been cut off and taken inside for display. Most camellia shrubs can live for roughly a century or maybe more. Some can grow to a height of about twenty-five feet. If you do not wish to have one that tall you can prune to any size needed, but the shrub does grow very slowly.

Camellias need a well drained slightly acidic soil for best growth. Once they are well established they are easily maintained. Always keep the soil moist but never soggy. When new growth starts to appear you can feed them camellia food. Always remember to follow the feeding directions and do not overfeed them.

There are vew diseases of the camellia but most of them will not happen in dry climates. The main disease is die-back caused by a fungus, if this happens prune away all the branches that have been infected. You need to prune them back until you reach clean wood. Another disease is a root rot, called phytophthora cinnamomi, which usually attacks camellia japonica. Having good drainage for your plant will help to prevent this from happening. Camellia sasanquas and the newer ‘winter-hardy’ camellias are immune to this disease.

When planting camellias in your outdoor landscape be sure plant them at least eight feet apart unless you are planting a hedge. Camellias planted as hedges only need to be about six feet apart. The ‘winter-hardy’ camellias to quite well planted as hedges. The camellia is well known for its attractive late fall and winter blossoms with its bright green shiny leaves; they are perfect for almost any garden in the winter.

Lower Back Exercises – Your Keys to Love Handle Reduction and Back Pain Prevention

The lower back is often a concerning injury prone area for many people, and a lot of the problems are due to a weakness of the core, particularly the lower back muscles. In men particularly, fat has a tendency to gather as ‘love handles’ around the lower abdomen, and lower back areas. This is a very good indication that there is not much muscle in that area, since if there was a lot of muscle, fat would be a lot less likely to build up in that area, due to the muscles requirement for calories for energy.

Don’t misunderstand – you cannot just build up your core by itself, and do no other exercises and expect the fat in the midriff to disappear – it won’t, simply because there needs to be a demand for calories from the whole body, so that it then takes that energy from the localized area around the core. Let me illustrate – how many people have you seen with massively muscular limbs that are also very fat? It doesn’t happen – the fact simply collects in places where the demand is lower.

Our sedentary lives do not require us to use our core and lower body generally, and due to this fact, we build up fat in these areas, as well as creating problems such as back aches, pinched nerves, slipped disks and other debilitating injuries that may be avoided with a muscular core from using lower back exercises and core exercises.

In conjunction with an effective lean muscle-building program, using whole body workouts, plenty of compound exercises, a good diet and high intensity, performing lower back exercises and core exercises will really burn away the fat in that area. Strengthening this area of your body will also mean that you will find day-to-day tasks much easier, and you may also feel as though you have a lot more energy, because these muscles do not fatigue quite as easily.

You can focus in this area if it is particularly weak, but once it becomes stronger, you must target it as part of full body workouts, rather than trying to isolate the area. In this way, all the supporting muscles get a chance to become equally as strong, and any functional movement can then become easier.

Before we get into some suggestions for lower back exercises – you should go and see a chiropractor if you have problems in this area, as your spine may also be out of alignment due to the weakness, and you would not want to cause any damage, and seeing such a professional is likely to make you feel much better and lead to long-term solutions. We will assume here that you do not have chronic pain, because if you do, it is better than you see a chiropractor or medical professional to ask advice.

So what sorts of lower back exercises can you do that will strengthen your back and core?

  • Bridge where you lie on your back with your feet on the floor, and push your hips up in the air until your hamstrings and abdomen form a straight line. Hold this position if you can do
  • Plank – Toes and hands in contact with the floor, in a push up position, hold for as long as you can, with your back straight, and your abdominal muscles tight and pulled in. Your back should not sag as you do this. If this is too hard try dropping to your elbows – the exercise should be performed in exactly the same way
  • Side Plant – Lie on your side, with your elbow and forearm on the floor, your feet together, and the side of one foot on the floor. Straighten your body so that it forms a straight line from foot to shoulder, and hold. Perform a few holds, and repeat for the other side of the body, on the opposite elbow and foot
  • Knee to elbow plank – This is a more advanced version of the above. Hold the plank in a push up position, then move your right knee to your left elbow, touch and back to the start position. Swap to the left knee, and right elbow. Do this exercise as fast as you are able, and make sure that your back stays strong – you can slightly stick your butt up for this one, as that will also engage the abdominal muscles a little more
  • Prone Cobras – Laying on your stomach, with your arms above your head, slowly lift your head and bend back, as your simultaneously move your hands back, keeping your arms straight, so that you end up in something like a crucifix position on your front, but with your arms as far back as you are able and your back arched and shoulders up and back
  • Bicycle crunches – make bicycle movements with your legs, as your upper body turns first left, elbow touching right leg, then right elbow touching left leg. This is a great exercise that will increase your strength in your oblique muscles as well as your abdominal muscles too
  • Resistance band rotation – Using a resistance band held on the left on your body, rotate your trunk to the right with your arms straight holding the resistance band handle. Perform sets for both sides of the body
  • Straight legged deadlift – with your legs straight, hold onto a barbell or dumbbells, with the weight at your shins, keeping the weights in contact with the shins, slide upward, keeping the back stretched, and the abdominal muscles tight. This is likely to be uncomfortable if you are arching your back – aim to stick your butt out as this will help you to keep your back straight and avoid the discomfort
  • Deadlifts – This is a generally great exercise to be able to do once you have strength in your lower back. Do not attempt to do this exercise if your feel discomfort in your lower back. It means that you are probably arching your back – instead strengthen your back with the other lower back exercises, particularly the stiff-legged deadlift, until this becomes comfortable, as your back is able to stay straight.

Having a strong lower back through lower back exercises is going to benefit in a large number of ways, including reducing injury, preventing back aches, reducing the risk of spinal injury, as well as giving you more energy and potentially a lower body fat percentage. The additional stability gained in the core is really going to benefit you if you wish to continue training, and build lean muscle, and get six-pack abdominal muscles.

The Great Game of Floor Hockey

Anyone who has ever participated in an elementary school gym class probably has some memory of playing floor hockey. This sport allowed both boys and girls the chance to play hockey without having to worry about learning how to skate. Today it’s reaching well beyond the confines of school curriculum and there are leagues for this fun and faced paced competitive activity in many cities.

For someone familiar with ice hockey it doesn’t differ much. Not everyone has the chance or the interest to learn how to skate. Many children live in warm climates where ice is a scarcity. For them the closest they get to hockey is watching an NHL game on television. With floor hockey, though they can go through the paces of a game without having to strap on a pair of skates.

When it’s played as part of physical education class the only equipment used is generally a stick and a ball or rubber puck. This is because there are understood and strictly enforced rules of no contact. However, if it’s a league of floor hockey those rules change and in light of that more safety equipment is required.

A helmet is really a must for any child interested in this sport. They may see it as overkill since they are only playing on a floor, but serious injuries can happen when one child is body checked by another. If the league insists on every floor hockey player wearing a helmet, it’s not even a question that a child will raise.

Knee and elbow pads are a great idea as well. Just as with something like rollerblading or traditional skating, kids can fall forward pretty easily when they lose their footing. This is true in sports including soccer and floor hockey as well. A good set of safety pads under the child’s clothing can really reduce the number of bumps and bruises they’ll sustain.

You can’t play without a stick. Some kids who are already playing the game on ice will be inclined to bring in that stick for playing floor hockey. There are actually sticks just made for playing the game in this setting. It’s a good idea to purchase a stick that is a good fit for the child now. Some parents think they can save a few dollars by buying a bit larger stick that their son or daughter will grow into. This isn’t a good idea as it can present a safety problem for both the child using the stick to play floor hockey with and the other players. If it’s too big for them to easily handle it, it’s not the right stick for them.

Lung Cancer Can be Deadly

Lung tumor is the product of malignant cells forming in the tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining the air passages. The cells in our bodies are constantly dividing and reproducing. Usually, there’s an organized pattern to this reproduction as cells use and specialize to convene particular needs. Occasionally, however, a faction becomes smashed. There’s a mutation in its DNA, and instead than budding and final as is ordinary, it continues to mimic unimpeded. In essence, this is pest – uncontrolled reproduction and tumor of abnormal cells in the body.

Most lung cancers are assumed to father in the epithelial lining of the lungs – the linings of the large and small airways that perform the errand of extracting oxygen from the air. Because this, lung evil is sometimes called bronchogenic carcinoma – melanoma arising from the bronchia. A smaller percentage of lung cancers arise in the pleura – the emaciated tissue sac that surrounds the lungs. These cancers are called mesothelioma. The most frequent form of mesothelioma is related to asbestos exposure.

Cancer of the lungs is one of the deadliest forms of blight. While it may take a phase of time to stem, the tumor regularly goes undetected pending recent in the manner. In addition, it tends to metastasize (migrate to other parts of the body) early, which leaves minus opportunities to dispute the mutated cells with surgery or radiation. Once the lung bane does metastasize, it briefly spreads to the most vulnerable and important organs of the body, particularly the adrenal glands, the liver, the brain and the bones.

There are two chief forms of lung plague – Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Small Cell Lung Cancer is fewer everyday, although far more deadly. It’s soon related to cigarette smoking – fewer than 1% of SCLC is diagnosed in non-smokers. It’s also very aggressive and sharp-poignant, metastasizing briskly to other organs, and regularly undiscovered pending it’s already widespread.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, on the other hand, is far more general, accounting for near 80% of all diagnosed lung cancers. There are three main types of non-small unit lung plague, generally characterized by the dimension, contour, and compound composition of the cells that form the scourge:

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (also termed Epidermoid Carcinoma): accounts for around 25% – 30% of all lung cancers, and is associated with a record of smoking. This canker is near forever found in the vital chest vicinity, near the bronchus.

Adenocarcinoma (also termed Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma): accounts for around 40% of all lung cancers, and is found in the outer expanse of the lung. Treatment for this form of lung plague often leads to a more successful outcome than that of other lung cancers.

Large-Cell Undifferentiated Carcinoma: accounting for only 10% – 15% of lung cancers, this form may show up in any question of the lung. It tends to butter speedily, and often fallout in a pitiable forecast.

It’s also likely for lung menace to be a combination of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer types.

There are other, less joint types of lung sarcoma. For request, bronchial carcinoids are small tumors often found in people under 40 years of age. They lean to grow gradually, and be willing to dealing. Carcinoid tumors account for about 5% of lung tumors. Some are non-cancerous. The others are generally dawdling-budding and can be successfully treated with surgery.

Finally, some cancers discovered in the lungs aren’t lung cancers at all. Since the lungs are level to metastatic cancers from other sites, it’s not uncommon for tumors from other main cancers to find their way to the lungs. When this occurs, the tumors are often discovered in the peripheral tissues of the lungs fairly than in the principal tissues.

Brita Water Filters – Are They Really Cost Effective?

It is true that Brita water filters are quite popular among people who are sensitive about the quality of water that they use. A big reason for their popularity is because, compared to other water treatment alternatives, they are quite cheap to buy.

There two types of Brita water filters now available. One is a faucet filter and the other is the pitcher pour through type.

The question is: Are they really cost effective? In other words, taking into account their total cost of ownership in relation to their effectiveness of removing pollutants from out tap water, are they really better than their competition?

In this article, I will guide you through a little analysis I made. Please note that all performance claims and pricing were taken from the manufacturer’s website, literature and certified claims.

First, let’s talk about the cost of ownership, which includes both the upfront cost to buy as well as the maintenance cost, i.e. the money you spend on cartridge replacement throughout the filter’s lifetime.

As for upfront cost, as I already mentioned it is relatively quite low. Just to give you an indication, a Brita pitcher costs about $25, while the faucet filter type has a tag price of around $35. In comparison, for a high quality home water filtration system you might have to pay upfront about $130.

However, when we consider the ongoing cost, then it’s a different story. As for the pitcher type, the suggested retail price for a single filter cartridge is $7.99 and the manufacturer recommends to be replaced every 40 gallons of water. That makes the cost per gallon about $0.20.

The faucet type single filter cartridge has a suggested retail price of $18.99 and lasts for 100 gallons. That makes cost per gallon to be around $0.20 as well.

Comparing these figures to the corresponding costs that other leading manufacturers of water filtration systems publish, you will see that the ongoing costs per gallon range from as low as $0.09 up to maximum of about $0.15.

Now, let’s do some math: If we say that the an average four-member household drink about 2 gallons of water per day, then in one year the total drinking water consumption of this household will be 730 gallons. Putting all our figures (initial costs and cost per gallon) for Brita water filters on the one side and those of another water filtration system on the other side as given above, then it is estimated that in about eleven months to a year’s time of daily use, the cost of ownership will be equal.

This means that, after the first year (maximum) of use has elapsed, it will become more expensive to use Brita water filters than to use its leading competitors.

When estimating effectiveness, i.e. how many pollutants they can remove and how efficiently they can do that, Brita water filters are clearly no better than average.

Let’s take chlorine, the widely used disinfectant which has been linked with cancer and atherosclerosis, the primary cause of heart disease. In their performance sheets, Brita manufacturer claims 99% removal of chlorine for the faucet type, while only 75% percent for the pitcher type.

As far as the very harmful by-products of chlorine are concerned, the Brita manufacturer states that neither of the products is able to remove them.

The same holds for VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), while as cysts and cryptogiardia (common pathogens) cannot be removed by the Brita pitcher type.

In general, the Brita faucet type filter performs better than the pitcher type. However, the faucet type still exhibits no better than average performance.

To conclude, it is clear that, while the Brita water filters seem attractive due to their low upfront cost, they are not so competitive in the long run. Especially, when you consider that they are underperformers for the purpose that you bought them in the first place, that is purifying your water!

Five Unhealthy Penis Signs and What They Could Mean

Although it spends most of its time tucked away out of sight, a man’s penis is a fairly reliable barometer for his overall health; signs of an unhealthy penis can indicate that not all is well, and that appropriate treatment is needed. Some common symptoms that could indicate an underlying health issue are discussed here, along with tips for ongoing penis care.

1. Bumps, warts or pimples – No penis has perfectly smooth skin, and bumps or pimples are not always a sign of anything sinister. A large number of men have a condition known as pearly penile papules, which appear as a pearl-like “necklace” of bumps around the crown of the penis. These are perfectly normal and should not be a cause for worry.

A raised, red bump that looks like a pimple could certainly be nothing more than a pimple – if a bump like this appears and then begins to heal after a few days, then there is probably nothing to be concerned about. On the other hand, if the bump appears to be filled with clear liquid, or if it crusts over, it’s time to head to the doctor for testing for a possible sexually transmitted disease.

A grayish or white, dome-shaped bump could be a genital wart, which is a symptom of HPV – a common virus that is spread through intimate contact. Men who have warts on the penile skin should avoid partner sex and should see a doctor for a positive diagnosis.

2. Dull, dry-looking, scaly penis skin – Skin that is dry, itchy and dull-looking could be the result of dehydration. It could also be a reaction to a soap or other detergent, or it could be caused by dry masturbation or sex. A dry, itchy penis that is accompanied by swelling or discharge may indicate a yeast infection known as thrush. This is easily treated with over-the counter creams, but a doctor should be consulted to be sure there is no other underlying issue.

3. Penis rash – A red, itchy penis rash may be related to poor hygiene. Washing on a daily basis, and removing any built-up smegma (for uncircumcised men) may be the only treatment needed in this case. A rash that spreads and causes severe itching may be a sign of a fungal infection; and again, it is important to rule out a sexually transmitted infection for a rash that does not improve after a couple of days.

4. Cuts and abrasions – The appearance of cuts or abrasions on the penis that are not the result of an obvious injury could be the result of an allergic reaction, a sign of a yeast infection, or simply dryness caused by aggressive masturbation or sex. An antifungal cream can take care of most yeast infections, and increasing water intake and using a lube is the best way to address dry skin related to friction.

5. Swelling, redness and soreness – These symptoms could be related to an injury; most often, they are signs of an infection. Men who are experiencing any of these should check in with a doctor for a professional medical opinion.

Everyday care for a healthier, more youthful penis

Caring for the penis is fairly straightforward, but it does require a little more than just a rinse in the shower. The skin down there is sensitive, and washing with ordinary soaps can actually cause drying, scaling and discomfort. Men can avoid this problem by using a gentle cleanser or shower gel that is formulated for sensitive skin – baby wash or hypoallergenic cleansers are a good bet.

Drying the area thoroughly before putting on clothing is also important, because wet skin plus clothing creates the perfect environment for growing Candida yeast. As a last step before covering up with clothing, applying a penis health creme (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) can supply the penile skin with vital moisturizers and nutrients that work to keep the skin smooth, resilient and youthful.

Bacterial Pneumonia Recovery

Pneumonia, which means inflammation of the lungs, is a common illness that can affect anyone. It is a much more serious condition in the elderly, in chronically ill individuals and in those with impaired immunity from cancer or certain medications. Bacterial meningitis is a disease found worldwide but most prevalent in Africa, where medical care is non-existent in some parts. Otherwise healthy people can contract this disease and if not given medical care immediately, they can be dead within a few short hours. It is important to seek medical attention immediately if your child develops a temperature and has difficulty breathing.

Besides people grappling with poor health and illnesses, such as heart problems, diabetes, liver malfunction, immune system disorders, dementia or impaired neural functioning, smokers, people living in crowded facilities and nursing homes, and those suffering from recurring lung and breathing problems are at higher risk. Identifying the population at risk is the first step to prevention. This is particularly vital for children under six months old.

On examination, the doctor may hear an abnormal breath sound called crackles and discover signs of pleural effusion, abnormal fluid buildup in the lungs. Effusion is responsible for fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, and a nonproductive cough. No single symptom is characteristic of all types of pneumonia. You should consider the possibility of pneumonia, however, if you already have a respiratory illness with symptoms such as a cough and fever, and you become short of breath while at rest and for no apparent reason.

Once you have the first sign of a cold such as runny nose, sore throat and cough, you have to take this herbal supplement immediately to prevent further exacerbating. Therefore, it is important that you have to be vigilant. By preventing the cold, the students will fit to concentrate on their studies both physically and mentally. Meningitis also can lead to skin rashes, although rashes caused by bacterial meningitis look different from those caused by viral meningitis. Immunosuppressed patients are at increased risk of opportunistic infections and acute bacterial meningitis.

The risk can be reduced, but not eliminated. First, smokers should abandon their habit for obvious reasons. Kids in their first year should be vaccinated against two potent pathogens Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococus pneumoniae to reduce the risk of illness.  This vaccine is commonly administered prior to going to camp, boarding school or other settings where a patient can contract the disease more easily, or prior to visiting a country where bacterial meningitis is prevalent.

Addictions – Addictive Behavior and Addictions

Addiction is the dependence on a particular substance, to the extent that fulfilling that dependence becomes a dominant preoccupation in a person’s life. Addictions may be physical, in that the withdrawal of the substance produces symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, or the dependence might be more psychological, producing craving and agitation if the consumption of the substance or behavior is prevented. Substance misuse, involving drug and alcohol abuse is an increasing international problem. These misuses cause a range of health and social problems, including the breakdown of families and increased levels of crime. Addictive behavior, such as compulsive gambling or shopping, causes social problems more than physiological problems.

Drug addicted people who have difficulty in dealing with anxiety, stress and other emotional issues, may find that certain drugs help them control their symptoms and allows them to be effective at socializing. Children, who grow up in surroundings where drugs and alcohol are openly available and misused, are more at risk to succumbing to addictive patterns of behavior.

There are a large variety of illicit substances available. Amphetamines, Ecstasy, crack and cocaine are the more commonly use stimulants. These drugs stimulate the nervous system and induce feelings of power and energy. They allow the user to keep on going for extended periods of time without sleep, but they could induce a sense of anxiety and paranoia. Exhaustion results from obvious continuous use with the possibility of long-term psychological damage. Some people believe that cocaine is a social drug with no potential for addiction, but crack and cocaine are extremely addictive. The cravings for crack are almost impossible to control; unfortunately it is these cravings that eventually lead to destructive behavior.

Other drugs have a more relaxing effect such as marijuana (cannabis), heroin and the anesthetic ketamine. Tranquilizers that are legally prescribed for short-term treatments for anxiety may also be abused as they have addictive potential. The regular consumption of marijuana may impair judgment and induce long-term psychological problems, such as demotivation and depression. Addiction has a destructive effect on relationships and employment. An addict may lose everything of value and face legal proceedings often ending up in prison.

Health risks of drug abuse are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Septicemia (blood poisoning), o Endocarditis (infection of the valves inside the heart), Cellulitis (infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues) and Abscesses (especially at injection sites)

Alcoholism. Alcohol is a depressant of the central nervous system that is accepted in everyday life and most societies around the world. Alcohol taken in moderation induces relaxation and eases inhibitions. In excess, it can severely impair judgment and coordination and induce violent behavior. Regular consumption may produce physical and psychological dependence, preventing the person from working effectively. This can further lead to loss of employment and the breakdown in family relationships. The health problems associated with heavy drinking are: liver damage, vitamin deficiencies and peptic ulcers.

Compulsive Gambling. Compulsive gambling is an intense desire to gamble and the urge begins to dominate your life. It more often affects men and tendencies appear before the age of 25. These pathological gamblers continually increase the amounts of money they bet in order to experience a desired level of excitement. This kind of behavior can destroy a person’s life, personal relationships, work, family and friends. In some cases, gamblers lie, cheat or even steal money, regardless of the effects it may have on anyone close to them. Therapy with encouragement from close friends and family can be successful.

Many specialists believe that there is such a thing as ‘addictive personality,’ which may be partly genetic. There is however, more evidence supporting that addiction is a learned behavior. One fact remains; that any form of treatment can only be effective in the long-term if the addict wants to stop and acknowledges their need for therapy.

Ways of Transmission and Primo Infection of Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is transmitted by respiratory way; an infected person will emit while coughing or sneezing about 2-3 bacterial particles. The person in immediate proximity will inhale the particles that will get to the lungs and multiply causing the infection.

Another less common transmission type is through the skin in laboratory workers and pathologists. They contact Mycobacterium through skin injuries while handling infected tissues. Cases of Tuberculin infection have been found also in circumcisions made with unsterilised instruments or in people with tattoos given in unhygienic environments.

In spite of the high risk of catching the Tuberculosis bacteria, the actual disease is only developed by 5-10% of the persons with primo infection. Healthy immune systems manage to annihilate the bacterial strains completely.

Most cases of actual Tuberculin infection are seen in smokers, persons of the lower society living in poverty and misery, alcoholics and people with depressed immune systems. The patients really developing the infection might go through two important stages of the disease, the primary and the secondary stage.

The primer stage of Tuberculosis or primo infection doesn’t show clinical signs of the disease and the patient is frequently unaware of his condition. The disease is not contagious in the primer stage and cannot cause further cases of Tuberculosis infection.
If the immune system is working, immune cells like the macrophages detect and ingest the infectious particles transporting them to the lymph nodes where they can be destroyed. In some cases, the bacterial fragments get to the lymph nodes and multiply causing the ganglion Tuberculosis.

If the bacteria is not destroyed and annihilated, the infectious the fire box activates producing the appearance of clinical signs of Tuberculosis. The patient coughs, sweats mostly at night, looses weight and develops fever. In case of an X-ray investigation opacities of the lungs and fluids collection (Pleurisy) can be discovered.

If the bacteria are only inhibited, not killed, the immune cells form a wall around the inactivated germs producing a so called Granulom. The wall collects amounts of calcium in time forming the Ghon focus. Usually the tubercles heal and permanent scars remain visible on the chest X-rays. The bacteria remain dormant inside the cell wall until the immune system is weakened by different factors and the bacteria are released. The primer infection can evolve into a secondary one.

The secondary Tuberculosis develops when the bacterial fragments multiply and begin to destroy the surrounding tissues inside the lungs. The infection might also advance to other organs or tissues by sanguine way. Other focus and tubercles develop inside the lungs and fluid collection can occur between the linings of the lungs. Patients in secondary stage cough blood and are contagious for people in the proximity.

Basic Food Processor Parts and Components

A food processor is a great time saving multidimensional kitchen appliance that can perform many different slicing, chopping, shredding and grinding tasks. However, despite its varied functions, it is a fairly easy and straightforward appliance to use.

Before using and experimenting with the appliance, familiarize yourself with its basic parts and components. A processor basically consists of the following easily manageable, movable and removable parts:

  • A heavy, stable housing unit or base that houses the processor’s motor. A food processor’s heavy base is designed to provide stability while the appliance is in operation. The base housing unit should remain steady and firm while the motor and spinning blades or discs are in play. The base also typically contains the appliance’s power cord and control buttons like on, off and pulse.
  • A shaft that extends up from the base unit and motor and which powers the blades and discs that fit on the shaft.
  • Various chopping and mixing blades and shredding and slicing discs that slide over the shaft.
  • A work bowl that fits onto the housing base unit and around the shaft. The work bowl, and thus the food processor size, usually range from 2 to about 13 cups of processed food.
  • A work bowl cover that fits on top of the work bowl and keeps the processed food within the food bowl.
  • A feed tube and pusher rod or assembly through which the food is introduced into the unit’s bowl, blades and discs.
  • Optional attachments which can include whisks or beaters.

Natural Solutions to Acid Reflux – Alternatives to Omeprazole and Prilosec

Looking for alternatives to taking over the counter acid reflux medications? There are plenty of options.

I recommend healing your stomach first and then using Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with the juice of a lemon slice in a glass of water to stimulate stomach acid. Sip before meals.

Here are some suggestions to heal acid reflux:

Step 1: Heal Your Stomach

  • Avoid spicy foods, tomatoes, coffee and wheat. These foods commonly cause acid reflux.
  • Consider taking a supplement which soothes the stomach lining.
  • Gastric Repair Complex by BioGenesis Nutraceuticals contains numerous herbs and nutrients designed to soothe and heal the stomach lining.
  • These are capsules but I recommend chewing the capsules and then swallowing. The flavor is good so that is not a concern.
  • Gastric Repair Complex works better when the capsules are chewed and then swallowed.
  • Consider chewing 2 capsules of Gastric Repair Complex with meals or after or anytime you have symptoms of acid reflux.
  • G.I. Comfort by Pure Encapsulations may be used instead of Gastric Repair Complex.
  • This contains additional soothing nutrients which are designed to heal irritated stomach linings.
  • Consider taking 1 scoop and putting in 1 cup of water. Let it soak for a few minutes, then sip. It will be a little gelatinous but this is how it heals your stomach. The taste is quite nice.
  • Do not worry that it is a pediatric formula. It is plenty strong for adults.

If stomach acid has been low for some time, there may be bacteria that needs to be eliminated. This bacteria is called Helicobacter pylori.

  • Helicobacter pylori takes hold in a stomach with a higher pH and begins to erode the stomach lining.
  • Higher pH’s in the stomach are caused by antacids and stress. Given that you have been on antacids for some time, you may have Helicobacter pylori.
  • Testing for Helicobacter pylori is not that accurate. If you would like to test for it, there are a few options. Search WebMD for “Helicobacter pylori tests”
  • I do not recommend the Triple Antibiotic Therapy for treating Helicobacter pylori. I believe that probiotics and Manuka honey can kill it effectively.
  • This erosion of the stomach lining by Helicobacter pylori causes ulcers and burning. Thus, it may not be acid reflux at all but instead an ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori.
  • If this is the case, the symptoms of acid reflux can occur at any time – not just after meals or between meals.
  • I highly recommend trying my suggestions coming up below in order to have a more complete resolution.

Manuka Honey has been shown in studies to eliminate Helicobactor pylori:

  • The conclusion of the research states:
  • “Assessment of the minimum inhibitory concentration by inclusion of manuka honey in the agar showed that all seven isolates (of Helicobacter pylori) tested had visible growth over the incubation period of 72 h prevented completely by the presence of 5% (v/v) (manuka) honey.”

Saccharomyces boulardii is researched to reduce symptoms of acid reflux associated with Helicobacter pylori

    • Saccharomyces boulardii combined with additional beneficial bacteria is also supportive in helping eradicate Helicobacter pylori
    • Recent studies have shown how Saccharomyces boulardii and a potent Lactobacillus combined with Inulin benefited those suffering from Helicobacter pylori.
    • The main point of the research states: “Based on their results, the authors proposed that S. boulardii with inulin may be a useful option to interfere with H. pylori colonization in asymptomatic children not requiring eradication therapy or in those unable to be treated with antibiotics.”
    • Consider taking a teaspoon of ProBiota 12 Powder at dinner time for 1 month. Only one bottle should be needed. ProBiota 12 Powder contains high amounts of the researched beneficial bacteria along with the needed Inulin.
    • Consider taking 2 capsules of Saccharomyces boulardii at dinner time until the bottle is gone. One bottle will last one month. S. boulardii is also available at HealthE Goods.

Step 2: Strengthen the Sphincter between the Stomach and the Esophagus

If the sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus is not closing well, acid may escape from the stomach and burn the esophagus.

There is a cell salt, Calc Fluor 6x, that is used to strengthen connective tissue. It may help reduce the feeling of the lump in your throat and strengthen the sphincter.

    • Consider adding 25 tablets of Calc Fluor 6x to a liter of filtered water. Drink throughout the day.
    • Do this for a few months in order to replenish the deficiency of this salt.

    Step 3: Increase Stomach Acid

Contrary to what most people think, the most common cause of acid reflux or GERD is low stomach acid.

As you heal your stomach with Gastric Repair Complex, ProBiota 12 Powder, Manuka Honey and possibly Calc Fluor 6x, begin taking Apple Cider Vinegar with the juice from a lemon slice in 1/2 glass of water 10 minutes before meals.

    1. Add 1 teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar
    2. Add the juice from a lemon wedge or slice of lemon
    3. 1/2 cup of water
    4. Sip slowly
    5. Once you feel the slight warmth in your stomach or slight burning, stop drinking the mixture.
    6. Begin eating your meals.

Be as relaxed as you can while eating meals.

    • The parasympathetic nervous system increases stomach acid.
    • Stress decreases stomach acid
    • Proper digestion of food requires stomach acid production.

If you do not want to prepare your own supplement to increase stomach acid, consider taking 1 capsule of PanZyme by BioGenesis before large meals.

In summary, the main supplements you should consider to improve symptoms of acid reflux are:

    • Gastric Repair Complex: Chew 2 capsules with each meal or after meals or whenever symptoms of acid reflux occur. Take as long as needed.
    • G.I. Comfort may be used instead of Gastric Repair Complex. Take 1 scoop with meals or whenever symptoms of acid reflux occur. Take as long as needed.
    • ProBiota 12 Powder: Take 1/2 teaspoon at dinner time for one month. Discontinue after one bottle.
    • Saccharomyces boulardii: Take 2 capsules at dinner time for one month. Discontinue use after one bottle.
    • Manuka Honey: Take 1 tablespoon between meals, ideally on an empty stomach. Take as long as needed.
    • Calc Fluor 6x cell salt: Take if you believe the stomach sphincter is not as tight as it should be. Add 25 tablets to 1 liter of filtered water and drink throughout the day.
    • PanZyme: Take 1 capsule at meal time if you do not want to use the apple cider vinegar and lemon juice drink prior to eating.

Lifestyle changes to improve symptoms of acid reflux:

    1. Limit the intake of coffee, tea and other acidic drinks. It sounds like you are doing a good job of this.
    2. Drink water or vegetable juice when not eating. This will keep up your stomach’s fluid levels and may reduce symptoms of acid reflux.

Dietary Changes to improve symptoms of acid reflux:

    1. Limit the intake of foods such as dairy products, spicy foods, wheat and other known foods which irritate your stomach or cause symptoms of acid reflux.

With the above changes in supplementation and lifestyle/dietary changes, you will notice significant improvement, likely in one week.

Tips on How to Control Swelling After a Knee Replacement

I have run across many orthopedic surgeons who have told their patients that, the knee surgery itself was the easy part, the tough part is the rehabilitation after. The rehabilitation aspect will ultimately fall directly in the hands of the patient. Of course there is a part to play here in regards to the physical therapist, and hopefully the therapist can impress upon the patient through education that keeping the pain and swelling to acceptable levels is vital for a successful rehabilitation outcome.

Our knees after the surgery are very temperamental. In other words, it does not take much in regards to exercise or excessive walking around the house to set off a chain of events that can take hours if not days to get back under control.

Many patients are told after surgery that the rehabilitation and walking are important. Often you will hear “you have too get up and walk” that’s true but like many things, this is done in moderation.

This will mean many things to many people but taking a walk around the house every hour or hour and a half is all that is needed. To much time on your feet will cause excessive swelling and a slow down of the overall strengthening and conditioning of the affected leg.

If you find you must be up on your feet more often due the fact for there is no one in your home to assist you with cooking etc… Its is suggested you look into getting a pair of TED compression stockings to keep the swelling down. They come in several sizes and the pressure gradients vary but a local medical supply should have them in stock. Contact your orthopedic as well if further information is needed. many times your doctor will issue these himself while you are at the hospital before discharge.

Keeping your affected leg elevated is very important. How long to keep your leg elevated will vary between individuals, but in the first two weeks after surgery if you are not walking or exercising, the leg it should be elevated and it should be positioned higher then your heart for proper drainage of the area surrounding your knee.

Keeping ice on the knee is important as well. The ice is used for pain control and to decrease swelling. You really cannot overdue the ice. Many people will have questions on how often the ice should used and how long. Using ice immediately after exercise is the time its most effective along with foot elevation for edema control it will be the best one-two punch you can get to keep pain and swelling manageable.

The amount of time you spend walking around your home or outdoors is extremely important immediately surgery. Getting up is good but this as well has to be in moderation. Body fluid is affected by the law of gravity and will pool in the lower portion of your leg or legs. if you find that you have to spend considerable time up on your feet, take the time that is needed then get back to where you can elevate the leg as soon as possible. I recommend also that if the swelling and pain are consistent and remains a chronic condition, to take an entire day off your feet with the operated foot elevated and you will see and feel a remarkable difference. Taking the day off means also that you hold the exercises as well. I assure you that you will do more good then harm by doing that. The problem would only lie if you decided to take several days off and not get in your walking or exercises that you would fall behind on your rehab.

Remember, ice, elevation, wearing a compression stocking on the operated leg and close monitoring of the time spent on your feet those first two weeks will determine how much pain and swelling you will encounter. If you are someone that retains fluid easily in the first place, your doctor may prescribe a diuretic like lasix to rid the body of the excess fluid, and prescribe the compression stocking before you leave the hospital.

Try this combination for starters and follow the suggestion of your physical therapist for the education needed to make the knee replacement as successful as possible.
