Where does ankle pain come from? Often times, when you suffer from ankle pain, then it is usually due to a sprain.

1.) Ankle Sprain Definition

A sprain is defined as an injury to a ligament (in this case it would be to your ankle). A ligament is basically a thick, fibrous like tissue that connects bones to each other. You can injure these ligaments by stretching them too far beyond their comfort zone. This can happen in a fall, or when you overextend yourself somehow. When the ligament itself is overstretched or even torn, this is referred to as a sprain.

In most cases a sprain is caused when your ankle is twisted inward, causing you to bear weight on the outside of your ankle. Needless to say this can make the ankle very unstable. You may also notice swilling, bruising and difficulty in weight bearing after an injury to the ligament happens.

Once the ankle is sprained then it may take a few weeks or even months to fully heal. The time it takes is associated with how badly you have injured the ligament. As a result, you may notice that the effected ankle may remain slightly weaker than an uninjured ankle, even after the healing process has occurred.

Strains can occur when you injure the muscles or tendons that attach muscles to bones. By pulling too far on a muscle you can injure the muscle or tendon. This can happen when you muscle is contracting and you perform an activity quickly in the opposite direction. Strains can also be associated with chronic activities that will overstretch a muscle fiber.
