First, we need to see what is liver cirrhosis and what are its causes.
This is an inflammatory condition in which your liver cells scar and harden, losing their function (mainly detoxing the body, acting as a metabolic powerhouse, and producing components of your blood). Furthermore, this constricts the passage of blood through the liver leading to even more cells dying.
Cirrhosis is mostly caused by alcohol, but other culprits include malnutrition, chronic inflammation, obesity and toxic substances.
Cirrhosis ever leads to liver failure. Because the liver detoxes your body, liver failure will lead to the death of several organs. Liver cells are also responsible for preventing excessive bleeding, which means that in failure you will bleed with the slightest bruise.
Cirrhosis starts as fatty liver disease. The symptoms are initially very discrete, with constipation, nausea, upset stomach and fatigue. At first there is weight gain but as fatty liver disease evolves into cirrhosis there is weight loss and the liver increases in size. There is vomiting and jaundice.
All this, however, is reversible.
A healthy diet consisting mainly of greens and fruit, combined with exercise are the first step. Avoid meat and milk (and dairy products). It is also required that you avoid alcohol and, preferably, tobacco and coffee.
As for supplements, milk thistle, turmeric, and ginger have all been proven to reverse not only fatty liver and cirrhosis but even liver cancer. There are a few combinations of these currently on the market, but you can also use each individually. Take them twice a day or as instructed by the manufacturer.
