ADHD, ADD Differences – Sorting Out the Confusion

What are the ADHD, ADD differences? The first refers to an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which means that the child’s main symptoms are related to hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention. This is also referred to as the combined type. ADD means that the main problem is inattention and that hyperactivity is absent.

But as there is a third subtype which is mainly hyperactivity only, the problem has been resolved by using ONE term, ADHD and dividing it into three subtypes to cover all the above. So, now we have the term ADHD as an umbrella term and its three subdivisions.

But are three subtypes enough to explain the ADHD, ADD differences and what about the term ADHD itself? This is actually a misnomer in that if your child has only attention problems, he is being labelled as hyperactive. ADD vs ADHD is all a bit messy!

In 2013, the new edition of the DSM, (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) Edition V will hit doctors’ and pediatricians’ surgeries and that is an event to watch! Why? Because there are suggestions to change the term ADHD altogether and just have three main conditions such as AD which will cover the attention deficit. The term HD will be used for those with hyperactivity only and ADHD will be for the combined type.

There is also a lot of discussion about actually raising the age of diagnosis to at least 7 years as experts have noted that the onset of symptoms can appear quite late. This would make diagnosing ADHD at the age of three a nonsense, but this is happening now, even as I write. There are also children on of a very tender age being put on psychostimulants! It is time to stop this madness. Certainly raising the age to 7-12 may help.

Whatever the decision on ADHD, ADD differences and the ways of defining them, I do not think much will change as regards treatment. Maybe, in the next few years, there may be a discovery of a drug which will act on a child’s brain without robbing the children of a carefree childhood which is their right!

Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp – Remanded Custody Vs Self Surrender

There are two ways to get to Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp. One, escorted by US Marshals under remanded custody and two, on your own recognizance, which is known as self surrender. Remanded Custody

If you are taken into remanded custody at your sentencing by the United States Marshals, you will spend a number of weeks or even months at detention centers, transfer centers and city and county jails before you finally reach your designated Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp. You will be transported between these institutions and finally to Federal Prison Camp free of charge courtesy of the United States Marshals. By all accounts, Federal Inmate Transportation is extremely uncomfortable, slow and tedious.

There are two factors that make remanded custody to Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp particularly unpleasant. Firstly, inmates of all security levels are transported together. This means that security is maintained at the highest of levels. Even though you are headed to a Federal Prison Camp, you will be treated like a maximum security Federal Prison Camp inmate.

Your wrists will be handcuffed in front of you, while leg irons will prevent more than a slow walk. A chain connecting the handcuffs and leg irons will further limit your movement. During the transport process, which takes place on vans, buses and airplanes (affectionately referred to as Con Air by many inmates) the leg irons and handcuffs are not removed, even when you need to use the restroom.

Armed with shotguns, the Marshals are concerned with one thing and one thing only, getting you from point A to point B and finally to your Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp. As one can imagine, the mood during this process, both amongst the inmates, just recently sentenced to Federal Prison Camp and amongst the Marshals charged with ensuring security during the trip to Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp, is quite serious.

Secondly, there is absolutely no hurry to get you to your designated Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp. You will be transported at the convenience and according to the schedules of the US Marshals. This, coupled with the fact that US Marshal policy allows transport during day time hours only means that relatively short distances can take weeks or even months to travel.

The entire process of checking in and out of various facilities and sitting shackled on vans, buses and planes can be grueling, so much so much so that inmates commonly refer to the ordeal as diesel therapy. For the first time Federal Prison Camp inmate, diesel therapy will serve to teach a valuable lesson. The BOP has very little interest in your privacy, convenience and comfort.

Self Surrender

Self surrender to Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp is a luxury granted to those the court deems at no risk of escape and at no threat to the community. If you are lucky enough to be allowed self surrender, following your sentencing you will spend the next one to six months at home, awaiting your Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp designation.

Whether you have been told to wait for a designation letter or not, I highly recommend calling the US Marshals office at the court where you were sentenced to ask for updates on the designation status. It is your responsibility to show up at the Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp on the specified date and at the specified time. Failing to show puts you on escapee status with serious consequences.

In my case I was told to wait for a letter, which never came. Thankfully, I was in touch by phone with the US Marshals office and eventually I was given my designation over the phone. The details of your designation will include the name of the Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp, the time and date you are to surrender and the Federal Prison Camp address and phone number.

The US Marshals will also be able to tell you your new eight digit BOP register number, which must be listed in order to receive funds into your Federal Prison Camp account and in order to receive mail.

A quick word on the location of your Federal Prison Camp designation. A recommendation from the sentencing judge that you be sent to a certain prison is just that, a recommendation. The BOP is under no obligation to comply. Further, the BOP states that they make an effort to place an inmate within 500 miles of his family. This effort is not always successful. In my case, I was designated to a Federal prison over 2,000 miles from home.

While my medical history dictated that I be sent to a Federal Medical Center rather than a Minimum Security Federal Prison Camp, there were two other such facilities within 500 miles. For whatever reason I was not sent to either one. If you find yourself far from home, eventually you may be able to transfer to a prison closer to friends and family. But it is not going to happen quickly and you need to be prepared for this eventuality.

Pre-prepared Legal Documents – Why "Canned" Documents Can Get You Canned

Watching the commercials on late-night TV can be quite an education for the estate planning lawyer. It seems every channel has a commercial hawking pre-prepared, or “canned”, legal documents in order to “save you the costs of hiring a high-priced lawyer”: “Save thousands of dollars with our easy-to-fill-in (insert type of document: wills, trusts, powers of attorney, deeds, etc.)!” “They’re simple to use!” “Avoid paying premium prices for something you can do at home!” There are always people smiling, and “testimonials” by “customers” who claim the forms came with step-by-step instructions and were so easy to use.  

To think that the planning, creation and execution of the most important documents in any individual’s life could be so simple! 

If only it were so.

This is a classic case of, “if it sounds too good to be true, it’s usually because it is.” American capitalism is a wonderful thing — and as a small businessperson I certainly appreciate the freedom Americans have to make a living — but it is not so wonderful if it harms the consumer who spends his or her hard-earned money on computer programs or form documents that ultimately will not do the job.

I have had several clients come to me with pre-prepared documents that were either completely invalid, didn’t do what they were supposed to do, or required a lot of legal work afterward to fix the mess they got the client in. Some were wills, others were trusts, some were corporation papers and still others were contracts.   In each case the client wound up paying more — sometimes far more — for me to clean up the mess.  

Lawyers don’t spend four years in college and another three years in law school to be able to fill in canned forms from an online website or office supply store.   Most legal documents — especially those that people need for their everyday lives — require precision and formality in order to be legally valid. And they must carefully follow the laws of the state in which they will be used. Wills must contain very specific language and be executed with extreme precision in order to be recognized by the courts. One misstep and a will is invalid. This is particularly important because you can’t re-do a will after you’ve passed on. And that is not what you want for your heirs.

The same goes for deeds, which also must be executed properly or they are not valid. Imagine thinking you’ve transferred — or worse yet, received — a piece of property, only to find out the document isn’t worth the paper it’s written on?   Contracts are another type of document people feel they can write up themselves or used “canned” documents without knowing the requirements of the particular area of law, or that state’s law. I can’t tell you how many times one of my red-faced client’s previous penny-foolishness led to lengthy and expensive litigation.

Is it really worth saving anywhere from $750.00 to $1,500.00, depending on the type of document, to have legal documents that may not be valid? While it may be tempting to use pre-prepared legal documents in order to save a little, their use is a classic case of being “penny wise and dollar foolish”. I always say to my clients: “Pay me now or pay me later. If you pay me now it will cost you less than if you have to pay me later to clean up the mess.”

Only a member of the Bar in your state is authorized and competent to prepare these all-important life documents for you.  Seek out the proper counsel and be prepared to pay a reasonable price now for expert advice and draftsmanship in order to avoid a costly problem later.

This is the reason tanning occurs in people who get exposed to sun. But melalin production is not enough to give all round protection to protect skin from dehydration and cancerous cell production. Important thing about epidermis is that it is composed of dead cells hence is non vascular i.e. it does not have blood supply and nervous supply.

Second is the dermis layer that lies below the epidermis. As it is beneath the epidermis hence dermis is not visible. Dermis serves very important function in the protective and perceptive role that skin plays. It serves many functions, as it possesses nerves ending, vascular supplies and glands (both oil or sebaceous glands and sweat glands). Due to presence of these factors we can perceive the touch sensation. Vascularity to the skin initiates in dermis and hence helps in providing proper nourishment to the skin cells. Dermis also contains sebaceous glands or more commonly called oil gland, which helps our skin in lubrication thus helping it from catching any infection. It makes our skin work as raincoats therefore help skin from getting sogged and swelled away in water. Sweat glands play a very important role in our life. Most important of all is that it helps in maintaing our body temperature; secondly it plays an excretory role by excreting out harmful toxins that might have formed in our body; thirdly it helps in protecting our body from microorganism as it possess antibacterial properties.

Third and the most important of all the layers is the subcutaneous fatty layer. Its role is to work as a shock absorber in he body and to maintain body heat from getting transferred to outside temperature. It also helps in holding internal organs tightly as it is present beneath the skin. This also contains a very peculiar feature that only mammals possess i.e. hair follicles. This layer is full of hair follicles out of which hair grows out. Nourishment of hairs depends upon the sebaceous glands, which opens into the hair follicle thus proving it with shine and nutrients.

Types of skins

It is really very essential to know the kind of skin you possess, as right care of skin can help in reducing any skin problems and avoid diseases.

There are mainly 5 types of skin: –

1. Normal skin: It not a commonest kind of skin. It is soft, smooth, velvety and evenly textured skin with no flaky dead cells and no pores visible. Proper distribution of oil and moisture is there that makes it a balanced skin i.e. not excessively dry and not excessively greasy. It is clear and free from blemishes

2. Dry skin: Skin is said to be dry, when skin is dull, patchy, reddened and flaky especially around eyes. Dry skin may cause formation of fine lines on cheeks, under eyes and corners of mouth. These conditions happen when oil or sebaceous glands are not supplying good nourishment and lubrication to the skin. If proper care is not given to the skin then it may lead to initiation of wrinkles in early age.

3. Oily or greasy skin: This kind of skin is thick, dull in colour and shiny in appearance. Due to over secretions of oils or sebum through oil gland, makes skin pores open and skin becomes sticky, which attracts dirt and dust from the environment. Due to this tendency, dirt and dust particles blocks the skin pores which are already widely open in oily skin leads to problems like black head, white head, acne and other skin related problems.

4. Combination skin: Commonly seen skin texture which is the combination of two kind of skin i.e. some of the skin area is dry and some of the area is oily. Usually it follows the pattern of “T” i.e. the greasy part is usually the portion which is vertical to nose crossing nose (nose, mouth and chin) and horizontal on fore head and hence referred to as “T-Zone”. The area left i.e. cheeks is comparatively dry.

Whenever you wake up in morning, wipe your face with dry tissue soon after leaving your bed. If you find oil on that tissue, you possess oily or greasy skin. The electric wheelchair is the greatest contribution from Canada to the entire world. In 1950, Dr. George Johann Klein developed this wonderful creation to make a revolution in the medical field. It was very useful at the time of Second World War and it helped to save many lives. Now different types of wheelchairs are available in the market. But all of them are derived from the old wheelchair which was invented several decades ago.

Dr. Klein integrated the opinions of patients, doctors, electronic engineers and scientists, before making this useful invention. His efforts were supported by the National Research Council of Canada, Canadian Paraplegic Association and the state’s Department of Veteran Affairs.

Wheelchairs before electric wheelchairs were mainly designed for paraplegic persons. But Dr. Klein’s creation had so many more features than a normal wheelchair. Its invention was very near to World War 2 so it made a great contribution to the Red Cross, and helped thousands of injured people.

Users of electric wheelchairs do not bound within the limit of quadriplegics and paraplegics, many doctors have suggested it for patients with cardiovascular issues. One desirable feature of the wheelchair is that any one can customize it with their use. They can use it indoor and outdoors as well. Some of them can port easily.

The main functions of an electric wheelchair are to help in movement. Besides going forward and backwards, movements like stretching and titling can also be done. Its movement is controlled by joy sticks; chin controls or sip/puff controls. We can control the wheelchair’s direction, speed or other parameters by these joysticks.

Deep Breathing – Nourishment Of Nervous System

Deep breathing is important from the standpoint of both health and spiritual development. Deep breathing increases our vitality and promotes relaxation. Unfortunately, when we try to take a so-called deep breath, most of us do the exact opposite: we suck in our bellies and raise our shoulders. This is shallow breathing. We will now summarize the benefits of deep breathing. Deep breathing produces the following benefits:

1. Improvement in the quality of the blood due to its increased oxygenation in the lungs. This aids in the elimination of toxins from the system.

Firstly, deep breathing leads to more efficient lungs, which means more oxygen, is brought into contact with blood sent to the lungs by the heart. Secondly, deep breathing leads to a greater pressure differential in the lungs, which leads to an increase in the circulation, thus resting the heart a little.

9. Deep, slow breathing assists in weight control. If you are overweight, the extra oxygen burns up the excess fat more efficiently. If you are underweight, the extra oxygen feeds the starving tissues and glands. In other words, yoga tends to produce the ideal weight for you.

10. Relaxation of the mind and body. Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing causes a reflex stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which results in a reduction in the heart rate and relaxation of the muscles. These two factors cause a reflex relaxation of the mind, since the mind and body are very interdependent. In addition, oxygenation of the brain tends to normalize brain function, reducing excessive anxiety levels.

SMART Board – Pros and Cons of Using a Digital, Interactive Whiteboard (In the Classroom)

We used a smart board to teach with in the computer lab at school. Essentially, a SMART board turns your digital projector / LCD Projector image into an interactive whiteboard that you can write on.

The SMART Board itself is a touch-sensitive giant screen that is connected to your computer. You use your digital projector to display your computer screen onto the SMART board and the software allows you to touch and interact with your computer.

As more and more school boards and teachers are investing in data projectors, it begs the question whether SMART Boards are a good investment. After all, an intuitive touch interface plus the ability to write on digital documents (with digital ink) would help us to move beyond blackboards, flip chart paper, and overhead projectors.


  • With the SMART Board, you can control any application through the touch board. So instead of working from behind the computer keyboard, you (or your students) can be at the front of the classroom physically interacting with the display.
  • You can use any of the 4 colours of markers or the eraser to write in digital ink over applications, web pages, or moving video. The SMART board still works if you lose the pens. (There are 4 coloured pen holders and one eraser. When you lift the pen out of the slot, it selects the colour or the eraser. When you touch the screen, it uses the selected color or the eraser.)
  • Like other digital ink software applications, you can save your work into a notebook file, and you can convert handwriting into text.


  • Hard to write. The biggest disappointment with the digital ink comes from the fact that a SMART Board is a front-mounted projection screen. This means that your data projector is set up in front of the screen (like an overhead projector). Which means that when you stand in between the projector and the screen, you cast a shadow on the screen… right where you are trying to write. Sure, it was cool to interact with programs by touching the screen, but, it was hard to write notes because you were constantly blocking the image.
  • Hard to write neatly. To be perfectly honest, it was a little disappointing how our handwriting turned out on the SMART Board. Better than our experiences with the other digital pens (i.e. the i-pen), but the handwriting was still large, blocky, and messy. One of the things you have to train yourself to do is to not lean up against the SMART Board. When you write on a blackboard or white board, you typically rest the edge of your palm on the board. If you do that on a touch screen, the cursor jumps to your palm and it doesn’t work out. You have to train yourself to just write using the tip of the pen. The marker worked fine if we wanted to underline or circle key ideas, but if you wanted to edit or revise a 12 point, double-spaced Word Document, you’d have a hard time getting the control required.
  • You still have to move back and forth from the keyboard to the screen. We could start up our web browser by touching the SMART board, but when it came time to enter in the website address, we had to go back to the desk to type in the URL.
  • Expensive. The Total Cost of Ownership of a SMART Board can be prohibitive for the classroom teacher. Retail cost of a 77? (195.6cm) front-projection SMART Board Interactive whiteboard is $1399 (USD) with a grant from the SMARTer Kids Foundation of Canada. (
  • You need to supply your own data projector. A new, decent projector will cost around $500 – $1000. The SMART Board is just a giant touch pad. Your need to provide your own projector to display the image onto the smart board. (Software, connection cables, and stand are included.)
  • You may want to upgrade to a wireless connection ($199 USD) to eliminate the cables and the tripping hazards in the classroom. The screen image and the SMART Board touch screen may get knocked out of alignment. This means that when you try to click a button, the mouse pointer appears a few inches to the side. You’ll have to realign your hardware which would interrupt the lesson.

Preventing Deep Vein Thrombosis

Perhaps you have heard about it on television, this recent phenomenon of people suffering serious illness, and even death, as a result of blood circulatory problems. In this modern age of travel and jobs that require less physical labor, we are fast becoming a sedentary race, and unfortunately this is causing various health issues like deep vein thrombosis. Fortunately, this is an easily preventable condition that does not take much work.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) is a condition defined by a blood clot, or thrombus, forming in a deep vein. Commonly affecting the leg veins, such as the femoral, popliteal, or the deep veins of the pelvic region, DVT can prove fatal if the clot makes it way into the blood. Clots may become caught in the veins and block circulation, or enter the heart and cause death. Therefore, it is always important to maintain good circulation and keep the blood clear. Consulting a physician or licensed therapist can help determine the best methods for staying healthy.

What Causes Deep Vein Thrombosis?

While recent research shows that various factors prove to put a person at risk for DVT, a more common cause for deep vein thrombosis isactivity. The less you move, the slower your blood circulates, thereby increasing the chances for clots to form. Business travelers, people who spend long hours in cramped airplane seats or in cars, and people bound to wheelchairs are especially at risk if they are unable to regularly circulate the blood in their legs.

Therefore, it is always recommended for people who are bound to desks and chairs to take advantage of quick breaks to get the blood flowing again. Even in an airplane, it is possible to stand up and move slightly around the cabin, if only to stimulate blood flow in the lower half of the body and prevent numbness.

Alternating Pressure and DVT

Ergonomic devices at work and home are always a plus. An alternating pressure cushion, for one, can improve circulation during times of inactivity.

Alternating pressure returns to a device that inflates and deflates in sections. Think of an air mattress or air seat cushion. As one pocket, the air is stagnant and does not move. When you sit on one, it may feel like sitting on an elevated version of the chair. Circulation remains the same.

Alternating pressure, however, works in a cushion devised of two or more air bladders interconnected to alternate inflating and deflating. Some bladders rise while others fall, and vice versa. This constant movement in a cushion lifts andifts the body in place, so even though one is sitting there is opportunity for better circulation.

Where there is better blood flow, naturally, there is less discomfort. Alternating pressure keeps the blood moving and the skin healthy, allowing it to breathe. When skin breathes, it contains a healthy color and elasticity. The blood flows and has less opportunity to clot, thereby reducing risk of DVT.

For the constant traveler and the cubicle worker, an alternating pressure device can be handy in eliminating the risk of blood clots in the legs, and in turn preventing serious conditions.

How To Get A Cholesterol Test

Cholesterol is a natural sterol that is produced in the liver; it is a vital part of a healthy body as it acts as a structural component of the cell membranes and helps the body to absorb various vitamins. Cholesterol becomes a problem when there is too much in the body.

Sometimes this is due to some hereditary condition but in most cases it is caused by what the person eats. Animals products, especially fat and dairy products have cholesterol in them. Eating too much of these types of foods or not exercising enough can lead to high cholesterol.

High cholesterol is not really noticeable to the person that has it. The first indication that they have a high cholesterol level may be during a regular check up at the doctors. However high cholesterol is believed to increase the risk of heart disease and thickening of the arteries. Both of these conditions can be life threatening so it is important to reduce cholesterol if the level is high. This article will discuss how you test cholestrol and the various tests available.

Anyone over 40 should be screened for cholesterol. This should be done as part of a regular check up every few years. A typical cholesterol test should be done as part of a lipid profile. A lipid profile essentially measures the amount and make up of lipids in the bloodstream.

Lipids are fats that attach them to lipoproteins in the bloodstream. Some of the lipids measured are:

LDL or low density lipoprotein cholesterol that is considered to be bad cholesterol because it thickens the walls of the artery;

HDL or high density lipoprotein cholesterol that is considered to be good cholesterol because it transports cholesterol to the liver where it is excreted;

Triglycerides that are fat molecules that are used as energy for the body. They are transported throughout the body on very low density lipoproteins (VLDL);

And total cholesterol. The total cholesterol reading of 200mg / dl is a normal reading. Anything over 250mg / dl is considered high.

Blood is drawn from a vein and then sent to a laboratory for analysis. This could take up to a week or longer to be returned. The analysis will be returned to your health practitioner who will decide a course of action should the reading be high or getting high.

There are home testing kits available if you are curious about your cholesterol level. They are not as accurate as a proper blood test but the y can give you some indication that you may have a high cholesterol reading. If you do have a high reading then it is probably a good idea to get a proper test. Home testing kits are cheap and work by analyzing a drop of blood taken from the finger. Most kits will analyze the blood in a few seconds and then give some color coded result. Green is low, red is high for example. Home test kits are generally good for one test only.

It is important to test cholesterol as early detection and treatment can prevent the onset of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. It is advisable to get it checked every few years, or, if you already have a high reading, every few months.
