Business Behavior Creates Health Problems

Work and health. These two topics are this century’s biggest concerns. In fact, they’re so interrelated these days that you’d be hard pressed to find people who work without concern for their health. And I’m not just talking about physical health, but mental and emotional health as well. Along with increasing rates of obesity, this country is also experiencing increasing rates of depression, apathy, and detachment from family, friends, and life itself. Suicides are at an all time high, violence is in an upsurge (if you watch the news, anyway), and people are becoming more self absorbed and concerned for their welfare than they are for their children.

What is the reason this is happening? It is the relationship we have in this country between our health and our work behaviors. Both systems have foundations in the old 19th century industrial work ethic and mentality. What we seem to miss is that by keeping the assumptions and beliefs of our forefathers in regards to work and health, we will not be able to change either the health care system or how we work. What are these assumptions and beliefs?

Here is an incomplete list:

-working 9 to 5(or 6) Monday through Friday for 40 years or more is how we always work, despite the changes in our world concerning doing work and business via new technology

-adhering to an agrarian educational system (children go to school from fall to spring with summers off)

-working longer hours produces better results than working shorter hours

-using managers as vehicles to control the mass of employees who are obviously not competent, need ideas and plans and behaviors given to them from above, have no lives of their own, and are not trustworthy

-physical health can be separated from mental and emotional health

-time equals money

-high levels of stress do not contribute to health problems

-work is more important than anything else in life which includes family, friends, hobbies, passions, creativity, imagination, rest, sleep, health, nature, and sports

-our health care system is the best one in the world

-our health care system really is a health care system rather than a pill and repair location for the body

These assumptions are basic to how our work and health behaviors work. Work in America is the number one activity we all engage in. Despite our complaints about wanting a life or being healthy or being free, work is what we all do. Work is the identity of America. Not freedom, not liberty, not basic civil rights, not prosperity or wealth. Work is how we all learn about each other and despite this, we all complain about work because none of us really want to do it. This creates a conflict between our emotions and our behaviors. Our behaviors stem from our flawed beliefs and assumptions about what work does for us, while our emotions dictate what we would really like. And despite the current saying that emotions dictate behavior, it’s actually the other way around. Our behaviors dictate our emotions.

Think about this. Anytime you want to go to do something, whether it’s watching a movie, hanging out with friends or family, playing with your dog, or taking a nice and casual walk in the middle of the day, we can’t. The thing we want to do the most is relegated to secondary importance because work is considered priority. Who’s priority? The company you either work for or your own business. And although we have tons and tons of time management courses and gurus, this way of living is getting worse and worse.

We’ve all read or heard that we must take time for the most important things in our lives, with health being number one. We can see that this will not work if we continue to believe the above beliefs and assumptions. We must replace these beliefs/assumptions with more empowering ones that will allow us to easily live lives of balance.

Which leads to a question about health. What is health? Is it being able to move like you did when you were 20? Or being able to creatively come up enough ideas to change the world? Or is it being able to enjoy the life you’ve been given each and every single day? The answer is that health encompasses our entire life. It means being able to live a life where you can be creative, in control, and minimize physical, mental, and emotional suffering until the very end of your life. It means following your heart’s desires and still retain the maturity and wisdom gained from past experience. It means being able to keep up with your kids when at the park. It means achieving the dreams you’ve always wanted to achieve. Health is the totality of life. Without health in any given moment, your life is not up to its potential.

Our work behaviors decrease our health potential. By believing work only gets done between certain hours on particular days or in particular ways, our health suffers. By believing that we should work for a company that says it has your best interests at work but really doesn’t is a fool’s task. Believing our work or health care system helps make America superior in the global environment is false, but it certainly produces illness and disease here in this great country. So, what are the new empowering beliefs and assumptions we “should” have?

-Work to get work done only when it needs to be done. If it’s not an emergency or a real priority relegate it according to your own to do list for the day

-The results of work should be productive and that’s all it should be based on, not the time you needed to get it done.

-Health is life. Without following our dreams or passions, being creative, getting enough sleep or rest, or doing activities we really enjoy, life can be an empty shell filled only with work.

-Work is fourth to family, friends, and passions

-Trust. Trust in yourself and trust others. If you are an adult, you should realize that other adults can be just as trustworthy as you when work needs to get done

-Play should be 80% of your life while work should be 20%

-Consistently repeat these beliefs to yourself each day in order to reap lifetime benefits

Type 2 Diabetes – How Likely Is a Diabetic to Fall Into a Coma?

Okay, the question about the likelihood of falling into a coma must cross every diabetics mind. The good news is, you are not very likely to fall into a coma. The bad news is, there is a realistic possibility of such an occurrence coming about.

Unfortunately, the blood sugar of a diabetic is not as normalized as that of a non-diabetic person, so there is the possibility of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia taking effect. In subsequent paragraphs, we’ll talk about a few symptoms that will give you advance warning as to whether a coma may be in your near future.

Hyperglycemia also leads to:

  • fatigue

Breathing difficulty of any kind (or any kind of “shortness of breath”) is a potentially life-threatening emergency. It can indicate numerous dangerous causes such as heart attack, pneumonia, or pulmonary embolism. There are other less serious causes, but these highly dangerous conditions need to be considered. Refer to the causes of breathing difficulty or causes of chest pain. These symptoms need to be diagnosed immediately by a medical professional because they can represent a life-threatening emergency.

Most children who take part in baby swimming show no increased incidence of lower respiratory tract infections, ear inflammation (otitis media) or tightness and wheezing in the chest. Before I was pregnant, I had been active my entire life. However, as soon as I announced my good news, it was suddenly everyone’s opinion that I should be spending all of my time at home learning to crochet!

With so many misconceptions about prenatal fitness, it is easy for even the most active woman to be concerned about the what’s good and what’s not when it comes to working out during pregnancy. For many, it is as if pregnancy is some form of chronic illness and us ladies should be wrapped in cotton wool for nine months. Of course it is important to take care of you and your baby, but is being active during pregnancy really a bad thing?

Prenatal Fitness: The Truth

Even for those women who were completely sedentary before pregnancy, general light physical activity is ok. Actually, performing some form of light activity throughout pregnancy, even just walking, can prevent excessive weight gain. This can help prevent complications like gestational diabetes.

Even those ladies who were incredibly active before pregnancy don’t need to suddenly stop. As long as you listen to your body and take the necessary precautions, there is no reason why you can’t continue your normal activities for the majority of your pregnancy.

I have known many women who have taught dance and done strength training right up until the day they gave birth.

In my experience, being physically active both before and during pregnancy assist with labour. Not only are your muscles stronger giving you more force but you have better knowledge of how to control and isolate your muscles.

Being more intune with your own body is something that is very important. But even more so during pregnancy. Understanding your body enough to know if something feels different during pregnancy and be able to use it effectively during childbirth are both important factors that being physically active can help.

It is important to discuss your fitness program with your healthcare provider. Whether it is your midwife or doctor, explain your activities prior to pregnancy and discuss your expectations throughout the next 40 weeks. Your healthcare provider will talk about it with you and if they know your lifestyle, they will consider it at every visit. This means they can keep a check on your levels and body to make sure what you are doing is fine to continue throughout your entire pregnancy.

It is also important to remember that even the best made plans can change. Pregnancy is unpredictable and your body changes rapidly. What may be fine to do one week may suddenly be off limits the next. Remember that yours and your baby’s health are the most important things. Don’t try to push yourself to reach particular goals is physically it becomes impossible.

Also take care in the gym. Remembering that weight lifting raises your blood pressure, if your strength training you should stop immediately if at any time you feel light headed or dizzy.

This meant  was dizzy to the point of fainting most of the time. Later on in pregnancy I had seperation of my upper abdominals and my daughters head engaging dislocated my hip. This left me unable to do pretty much anything. Therefore, it is good to keep in mind that even if you are a very active person, circumstances may not allow you to be active throughout your pregnancy.

Therefore, it is important to speak with your healthcare provider and listen to your body. But as long as you do this, there is no reason why you can’t participate in prenatal fitness. 

How to Kick Recession Depression

Okay, okay I finally have to admit it-the economy is kind of crappy right now. And it's scary (not that the media is not fanning those flames just a bit). People are afraid they might lose their jobs, entrepreneurs are afraid they might lose their businesses, people are afraid they might lose their homes. So what to do?

1.) Tattoo the serenity prayer in a prominent place on your body. Refer to it often. Remind yourself that there's a lot you can not control and let it go. But there are some things you can control. Those are the things to work with. Example-I can not control if any particular prospect will buy from me. But I can try to do my best with every prospect. I can not control prices, but I can control my spending. Why lay awake at night worrying about the stock market? We can not do a damn thing about it. Take a deep breath, say "Serenity now" and let it go.

2.) Go back to basics. I think back to what worked for my business in the past-attending networking events (something I did not have time to do when I was busy), personal notes, this newsletter, the basics. What works best for keeping you job? The basics-showing up on time, having a great attitude, dressing nicely. What about your finances? The basics-spend less than you earn, save some money for a rainy day, etc. I think we got away from the basics when times were fat and happy.

3.) Review your risks. I paid off my mortgage this year rather than taking a cool vacation. I'm usually not so risk averse, but this move makes me feel very secure. And ironically I feel like I can take bigger risks! I let go of 35% of my clients right before the bottom fell out of the economy. The fees they paid me were significantly lower than my other client, but still-35%! It was scary, but it was the best decision I've made. I work less, earn more money, and do better quality work (because I'm not rushing and exhausted). Do not let this time stop you from taking risks-just take the right ones.

4.) Review how lucky you are. I do not care what your situation is right now, you have something to be grateful for. I'm grateful you are taking your precious, precious time to read this. I'm grateful for all the people who have had enough faith in me to work with me over the years, I'm grateful to all the people who have been in my audiences and did not boo (or throw things). This time should make you more grateful for the customers you do have, the employer who gives you a job, the employees who understand when you ask them to give a little bit more, and the fact that the Russians have not invaded any place ( Laately).

5.) Lower your expectations. I am not advocating giving up-far from it. But maybe you can not pay for that Ivy League education after all. Maybe little Timmy will have to go to State. Maybe you will not get the $ 5,000 bonus this year, because sales are off. It's okay. All you can do is your best. You are hard on yourself-ease up.

6.) Review what's really important to you. I think this is a good idea no matter what the economy is doing. A lot of times we do not realize what this is until we lose it. How important is your family? Your health? I do adore my work, but before I let some of my clients go, it was my entire life and I was exhausted. Now I have a fun blog, a new hobby, and time to sleep and work out. Maybe this is a good time to change how you think about success. Is it how much money you make or how happy you are?

7.) I've said it before and I will say it again (mostly because I need to hear it) stop comparing yourself to others. You really do not know what you're comparing yourself to anyway. I used to always feel bad about being single. But the more interviews I see, the better I feel !! At the end of the day, all that matters is how happy you are in YOUR life. Is not that what we all want-to be happy? And as Abraham Lincoln wisely said, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." What to be unhappy? Compare yourself to other people.

8.) Remind yourself that you can come back from anything. If you're an entrepreneur, you built your business from nothing. You did it before, if you have to, you can do it again. If you're an employee, there was a time when you were unemployed. If you found your current job, you can find another. Do not think of something as an ending, think of it as a new beginning. Think that's all motivational BS? Fine, go ahead and think of it as the end. Is that empowering? Does that help? What to just hang around in the parking lot and hope the plant reopens? Read "Who Moved My Cheese?" And get with the program.

9.) Learn something new. This is just smart-it keeps you engaged, but it also makes you more marketable. I'm thinking work related here-things like new technology, communication skills, dealing with others, business writing-there are endless things we could all improve on. Pick something you like. Tell your boss. If you're a leader, provide learning opportunities for your people. Do not stop all the training because you're scared! The world is not going to stop changing because times are tough! Your people need to be better in tough times-the competition is more intense!

10.) To steal from AA-take one day at a time. Just do your very best today. Part of our fear is that we can not see the end-we do not know how bad things might get or how long this will last. We fear the unknown, we imagine the worst. STOP! Work with what you have-this day. Make this day your masterpiece. That will be enough.

How to Confront Your Fear and Conquer It

My former career in the legal system brought me into contact with people who were hopelessly buried beneath layers of fear. Fear is often the consequence of a negative experience. A traumatic event is an extreme negative experience. For people who have experienced trauma, the phrase “negative experience” does not begin to describe the intense emotional pain that comes with such an event. Some unfortunate souls develop what psychologists call post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This medical condition is incapacitating. It can produce panic attacks, which are experienced by the traumatized person as symptoms similar to a heart attack. Needlessly to say, PTSD is debilitating and can lead personal dysfunction.

Fear, by its nature, is a difficult emotion for anyone to emotionally process. There will be times when we encounter people whose expression of fear may seem unreasonable to us. Please understand that these terrified people are unable to cope with the object of their fear. Many serious phobias arise out of fear. Someone once told me about a person who has or had a fear of turtles. This unknown person’s phobia amused me. I said to myself, “How can anyone be afraid of a turtle.” I jokingly thought “Maybe they are teenage mutant ninja turtles. Those turtles can be scary.” Apparently turtles bother some people, just like snakes and spiders. Anything at all can produce fear in the mind of a human. All phobias and fears are valid. Take a look at the top ten most common phobias:

– Arachnophobia -The fear of spiders.

– Ophidiophobia – The fear of snakes.

– Acrophobia – The fear of heights.

– Agoraphobia – The fear of situations in which escape is difficult

which escape is difficult.

– Cynophobia – The fear of dogs.

– Astraphobia – The fear of thunder and

lightning.

– Trypanophobia – The fear of injections.

– Social Phobias – The fear of social

situations.

– Pteromerhanophobia – The fear of flying.

– Mysophobia – The fear of germs or dirt.

As you can see there are many kinds of phobias and trauma that have their roots in fear. Fear is difficult to remove without professional help. It is my personal opinion that traditional talk therapy is of little use in helping a person escape the clutches of fear. No matter what kind of trauma a person has experienced, allowing a mental health counselor to validate your feelings is extremely ineffective. It may feel good, but it does nothing to help a person regain control of his or her life.

I know several anxiety-ridden people who have paid substantial amounts of money, to hopefully well-intentioned psychotherapists, to listen to them express their fears for over a decade, without making any progress toward their recovery. To be fair, there are excellent therapists who know how to successfully work with people’s fear-based anxieties. If you like the feeling of talk-based therapy, then please disregard what I said. In most situations, there’s more than one path to a successful outcome.

Fear is a part of the human condition. Fear serves a purpose for humans. It can keep people from getting into trouble. It’s supposed to make humans think twice before engaging in an activity that might be detrimental to their well-being. This is why civilized societies have judicial systems. Criminal Statutes have consequences and punishments incorporated into their language to deter crime. Unfortunately there are many hardened offenders who have no remorse. Some people display no outward fear. They choose to hide it from themselves.

People with phobias and trauma, and other fear-based issues create an altered reality to deal with their emotional pain. This is especially true of trauma victims. Childhood trauma can permanently damage a person to the point that he or she may never recover from their experience(s). It is regrettable that these unfortunate abuse victims cannot cope with the painful reality of their situation.

If you are a person living in fear or have recurring dreams and memories of a traumatic event, please understand that you are creating an altered reality that allows this to situation occur. You alone are responsible for your fear. You may or may not be partially responsible for the original event that triggered that fear-based reaction. Fear rarely manifests externally. If you are being held captive by a crazed lunatic, then this article will not help you. I am not being sarcastic in saying that.

Most of our fear is created by our powerful imagination. The term imagination is misleading in the way that society uses it. The strange characters that interact with us in our dreams and imagination are very real. This is a metaphysical explanation. No one with trauma wants to consciously acknowledge this principle. And for a very good reason. It makes their fear that much more real. However, it actually makes no difference. Fear is fear.

Fear itself is a conscious entity. It feeds off your emotions. It is attracted to your emotions. You are making a home for it. It will not leave until you make it go. The fear entity takes on whatever dreadful form is necessary to produce the emotional reaction in you it desires.

This concept is related to teachings of the law of attraction theorists. I’m referring to the widely accepted principle that thoughts manifest into reality. The notion that thought forms are endowed with a vital essence is also nothing new to metaphysical literature. Past-life regression therapists, future regression therapists, and age regression therapists, use hypnosis to help their clients resolve personal conflict. They treat “imaginary” characters as real in order to make the therapy session effective for the client. I’m not sure how many hypnotherapists focus on the reality of the client’s tormenter(s). This is the metaphysical aspect of this type of therapy, which is why I focus on it. Hypnotherapists are concerned with the practical side of this phenomenon and the positive results that it produces in their clients.

I feel that it is far better to confront your fears, than run from it. Overcoming our fear leads to personal growth. It is good for us to face our nightmares. Again, I recommend doing this with the support of an experienced hypnotherapist. Not everyone will benefit from confrontational therapy. There are also a number of excellent psychotherapists in this country and abroad who are experienced in helping their clients engage in an introspective examination of their thoughts and emotions to unearth the cause of their fear. This milder therapeutic approach requires a substantial investment in time, money, and a successful outcome is dependent on the willingness of the client to actively participate in his or her recovery.

You have the power to stop your fear in its tracks. If you are experiencing recurring visions of being attacked by a known or unknown assailant, then you will need to do the following. Realize that you have the ability to make this person, creature, dream character, apparition, phantom, or other entity stop their harassment. You have the ability to control your nightmare. Do not let your fears over-take you. Rather than running from the object of your fear, face it with both feet planted in the ground. Remember that you are in control of the situation. Nothing bad can happen to you. Do not play the victim role. You are only allowing the situation to continue by calling yourself a victim. Fight back. I guarantee you the fear entities will run from you. They are bullies. Once you stand up to them, they will go away. Bullies only pick on people who consent to their cruelty. Say the following to your fear-based characters. NO! I said stop! Go away!

Many years ago, my wife and I lived in an old house which was host to the most bizarre paranormal manifestations. This residential dwelling could be likened to a classic haunted house. We were witness to a number of supernatural events while living there. There is one experience that I feel would reinforce what I am trying to say.

At night we would hear scratching noises. We determined to our satisfaction that these sounds were not coming from our dogs. My wife and I both believed this noise to be coming from an unseen being. We came to this conclusion because of the other bizarre experiences we had in this worn out dwelling. The sound of claws scratching wood went on for quite some time and affected our sleep. One night, my wife who was particularly irritated and tired, said to the entity in a firm and sharp tone “I said stop.” I could never describe or imitate exactly what her voice sounded like. She wasn’t yelling. The tone of her voice was the kind a mother uses on her disorderly child to let him or her know that she means what she is saying. This technique worked perfectly, we never heard the scratching sounds again. My wife is a good witness for supernatural encounters for the simple reason that she does not have a passion for it.

I want to point out that this annoying entity was probably a human spirit as opposed to an evil spirit. Dark entities are more persistent than common spirits. They all have inflated egos however, which is why they are bullies.

In my case, I have been pursued by dark spirits for many years. These days, psychic (I am not fond of this word) practitioners refer to them as negative energies. In any case, they are malicious, malevolent entities. My sense is that they are a remnant from my past life as Arthur Edward Waite. That information is not especially important to this article. What I want my readers to know is that I too was stricken with anxiety I first became aware of them. This was several years ago. They have followed me through a number of moves since then. I have become accustomed to their occasional presence.

On one occasion (about a year ago), I sensed the presence of evil in my new home a few days after I moved in. Evil has a distinct quality. I cannot describe the sense that alerts me to their presence. I became concerned about their presence, so I asked my Spiritualist pastor for advice on removing them. She said I should burn sage. Sage is supposed to drive out negative energy. I wrote a banishing script like kind used by occult practitioners centuries ago. I proceeded to burn the sage, and with a white candle I walked through the house reading the script. I was a bit brazen in the way that I spoke to the dark spirits. I forcefully told them that I am the boss and I insisted that they leave immediately. Unfortunately the sage had no effect on the dark spirits.

A week later I was meditating in the dark on the edge of my bed. Suddenly I felt something moving underneath my left eye. I have never felt anything like it before. I could only describe it as a bug crawling on my face. I said “Cut it out!”, and I pushed my arms out at the space in front of me. I went to the bathroom, looked in the mirror, and observed that I had a red scratch under my left eye. It was a superficial mark. I asked my wife if she saw the scratch. She did and confirmed that it was not there prior to my meditation.

What this means for the subject of this article is that these evil spirits are bullies. They were trying to send me a message that I am subordinate to them. They see me as a lesser being. I disregarded their warning. The worst thing that a person can do with these foul creatures is show fear. I instead ignored them and went about my business.

The evil spirits did not make another move until about two months ago at my new residence (by now I realized that moving does not rid one of spirits). Bullies will often come back to retest their targets. One night I lying on my bed meditating with my eyes closed. Through my eye lids I observed an apparition floating on the ceiling. The vision was unclear, but could I see ribs and loose garments. It seemed to be floating on waves. I jumped up and waved my fists at it. That event effectively ended my meditation.

A few days later I was thinking about these beings and how I feel they have no power. A thought came to me from what I felt was outside of myself. It said “Do you remember when you were eighteen and you awoke from a sound sleep unable to breath? We were responsible for that.” This is a true experience I had when I was a teenager. Mother and brother came into my bedroom alarmed by what they saw. I fell unconscious on the floor for a few seconds. I consulted with a physician, but he was unable to determine the cause. I have not had a similar experience since then.

These dark spirits have physically assaulted me and threatened my life. I continue to defy them in spite of their intimidation. I am aware that it will do them little good to kill me, as I am a spirit myself, and I cannot die. So their threats are in vain. I’m sure they know this.

I may as well continue my discussion about the dark spirits since I am on the subject. There are some myths about demonic possession and spirit possession in general. Possessions by evil spirits are relatively uncommon. At least in most industrialized nations. In some cultures, people are open to possession. Who really wants an evil spirit taking possession of their body? A person must submit to the will of the spirit in order for the supernatural possession to occur. This means that the dark spirits or other entities must have the consent and cooperation of the host, or the possession will not take place. Evil spirits know who the suitable candidates are. They are opportunistic and in search of easy prey. Spirits also require a kind of technical expertise to make a classic possession work. Most malevolent spirits lack the metaphysical knowledge required to pull off the kind of dramatic possessions seen on television.

My point in relating my experiences with dark entities is that I want my readers to understand that backing down from a bully will only make your situation worse. In fact, showing weakness only encourages the dream characters, spirits, phantoms, and demons to continue their harassment. It’s important to stand up to these nonphysical beings and show them you are not going to take it.

Self-defense instructors teach women to yell, scream, kick, bite and get the attention of others when they are attacked by a stranger. An attacker will usually run away rather than risk getting caught. Victims are people who submit to the aggression of bullies. Similarly a burglar will avoid breaking into a house with dogs. Chances are good that there are a lot other houses in the same neighborhood without pets. Criminal offenders sometimes use a part of their brain that requires rational thinking. They just need to put it to better use.

Capsulitis in Your Foot

Has your second toe looked or been inflammed lately? Do you feel like there is a bunched up sock in your foot? Is your second toe drifting towards your big toe? All of these symptoms may be the sign of capsulitis of the foot. What is capsulitis? In our second toe, there are ligaments that surround the joints at the base of the toe, forming what are called capsules. Capsulitis is an inflammation of these capsules. While capsulitis can affect your third or fourth toes, it most commonly affects the second toe. Capsulitis can also be known as predislocation syndrome, due to the fact that if the condition is left untreated, it can lead to a weakening of surrounding ligaments and cause a dislocation of the toe.

What is capsulitis caused by? Capsulitis in your foot is thought to be caused by abnormal foot mechanics, especially when the ball of the foot takes a great deal of weight-bearing pressure. Other conditions may predispose you to capsulitis, including bunion deformities, your second toe being longer than your big toe, an unstable arch of your foot, or a tight calf muscle.

What are some symptoms of capsulitis? Capsulitis is a degenerative disease and therefore should be treated as soon as you notice the condition. Symptoms in the early stages may include:

1. Pain in the ball of your foot, almost like there is a bunched up sock .

2. Swelling in the area.

3. Difficulty wearing or putting on your normal shoes.

4. Pain when in barefeet. In more advanced cases, the affected toe may start to drift over to the big toe and cross over.

How will my podiatrist know it is capsulitis? This condition may often be confused with Morton’s Neuroma, which has similar symptoms, so it is crucial that you get an accurate diagnosis from a podiatrist. Your podiatrist will manipulate the affected area to produce symptoms and X-rays will be ordered.

Will you need surgery? Not if it is caught in the early stages before it crosses over. Once it has crossed over, the toe will never go back to its original place and will need to be surgically corrected. Things that can be done prior to that are:

1. Rest and Ice.

2. Anti-inflammatory medications, like ibuprofen.

3. Taping and splinting.

4. Stretching.

5. Shoe modifications.

6. Orthotic devices.

Always contact your podiatrist first when you think you have capsulitis in your foot! They are the only ones who are specialized in treating your foot and ankle!

What You Would Want To Know About Your Broken Toe

“I thought I didn’t need to see a Podiatrist for a toe break but this hasn’t been getting any better!” Horace said. I looked down and couldn’t help but smile. I had heard this from Penny and Rod (names have been changed to protect the . . . health information. Please google HIPPA) the week before. It’s an excellent idea to consult your podiatrist whenever you injure your foot, particularly if you suspect a break. Many fractures of the toe can be treated. Depending on the severity of the break, many may respond to conservative treatment, but some might be serious enough to require surgery. Failing to get proper treatment may result in improper healing of the fracture. Deformity in the toe or foot might follow, making it more difficult to wear shoes comfortably, and reducing the function of your foot. Improper healing may also cause arthritis, or other long-term pain.

One type of break is a traumatic fracture, which results from a particular event, such as stubbing your toe on that wretched enormous dresser in the middle of the night, or possibly dropping an armful of bricks on your foot. In the case of Horace, a couple of weeks ago he had been going to get his mail (barefoot) and while returning back to the house tried walking and reading at the same time. Horace was so engrossed in the daily mail he neglected to lift his foot up on the curb at the right time and . . . WHAMMO. This type of fracture may be displaced (the broken bone has shifted from its proper position) or non-displaced (the bone is cracked, or even broken through, but it hasn’t moved from where it’s supposed to be).

Another type of break is a stress fracture, which occurs when repeated strain is put on a bone, resulting in small breaks that develop over time. Athletes who precipitously increase their activity (particularly runners), people with osteoporosis, and those who have abnormalities in the structure of their feet may be most susceptible to this type of fracture.

After taking x-rays of Horace’s foot and diagnosing the fracture we discussed what things he should do to get better quicker. In Horace’s case the break did not require surgical correction. “Horace, you need to transfer your weight to your heel as much as possible.” I produced a small cushioned splint and held it up for him to see. “This splint with the padding will protect the toe.” I demonstrated how it wrapped the toe bringing it securely around the adjacent uninjured one.

I also advised Horace the key to proper healing of breaks is immobilization. Finally I fit Horace for a sexy stiff-soled shoe that would keep the toes open and prevent rubbing as well as make it easier to walk on his heel.

If the bones had been dislocated or highly displaced, I would have needed to realign the bones (aka reduction) in order to get the right pieces to knit together with the other right pieces. Many times I can do this manipulation of the bones without surgery. However, especially with particularly bad breaks/dislocations, surgery may be needed to keep all the pieces of the broken bones together as they heal. Surgery often involves placing pins, screws or plates into the bone fragments to keep everything nicely aligned.

Horace was relieved to know he didn’t require surgery and decided that he would limit his multitasking to walking and chewing gum.

Proper Riding Gear

Whether you are just learning to ride or you’re already an experienced biker, remember to always wear your safety gear. Going down on a motorcycle hurts, there’s no denying it. Have you ever fallen off a bicycle? Remember how badly your skin and hands hurt because they were scraped along the street or sidewalk? Remember how easily your knees and elbows bruised? Now magnify that based on the speed your traveling on the motorcycle. Even if you’re driving around the block in your development or driving in a parking lot, you will easily scrape yourself up worse than any bicycle fall. I’m not stating this to scare you away from riding a motorcycle, I just want to make sure you protect yourself by wearing as much safety gear as possible, including gloves, leather jacket or armored clothing, boots, goggles or sunglasses, and a helmet (which is required by law in most states) . Getting On

Before you just jump in the saddle, you should do a T-CLOCS check of the bike. Let me explain —- EVERY TIME before you ride, you should make sure it’s fit to be on the road. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has a checklist they call T-CLOCS:

T — Tires, wheels (air pressure)

C — Controls (clutch lever, throttle, brakes/pedals, cables, hoses)

L — Light (battery, headlights, turn signals, mirrors)

O — Oil (and other fluid levels)

C — Chassis (the frame, suspension, chain/belt, etc.)

S — Stands (kickstand and/or the center stand )

If the motorcycle checks out just fine, you’re ready to get in the saddle. Always mount the motorcycle by throwing your right leg over the seat. When getting off, always bring your right leg back over the seat. This is done for two very important reasons: 1) The kickstand is on the left side of the bike and that’s where the motorcycle weight is hanging. 2) When getting off, it is very easy to burn your leg on the exhaust pipes on the right side of the bike, and you don’t want to get your leg caught on the seat and pull the bike down on you.

So, starting at the left of the motorcycle, grab a hold of the handlebars, put the weight of your body on your left leg, and lift and throw your right leg over the seat and onto the other side of the bike. Take a seat on the motorcycle. Take your time and get accustomed to the bike. Make sure your mirrors are adjusted properly to where you’re sitting, get used to where the controls are (horn, turn signals, lights, etc.). While the kickstand is still down and holding the bike upright, put your feet on the pegs and get a feel for your leg positioning.

Now before you put that kickstand up and start riding, let’s walk through the controls…..

Controls/Hands&Feet

Let’s go over the basic controls of a motorcycle. Get familiar with the key controls like the brakes, clutch, pedal shifter, throttle, and turn signals. This will enable you to learn fairly easily and then we can work on technique. I say this because you don’t want to be looking down at your feet or your hands while riding.

Let’s start with the right side:

Your right hand is responsible for two major functions in motorcycling – accelerating and braking. If you turn the throttle by twisting the right grip toward you, you apply throttle and give it ‘gas’ to the engine. Do not overdo it here as a little twist will do the trick. If you pull back on that throttle too hard, you’ll end up on your butt before you get out of the driveway. So be gentle with this control.

The right hand also controls the front brakes, just like you would have had on your bicycle. Pulling the lever toward you applies the front brakes. You want to gently add pressure to braking as you don’t want to yank the lever too hard, forcing the front brakes to lockup, thereby causing the bike to skid, and possibly end up in an accident. Most bikes are able to come to a stop using a two-fingered technique (your index and middle finger on the brake level while the thumb is under the throttle and the other fingers are on top of the throttle). Some bikes require all fingers around the lever and the thumb under the throttle. You’ll need to assess and use whatever technique works best with your bike.

Your right foot is used to operate the rear brake, but just note that when you use the front brakes, the rear is a little less effective. See, what happens is when you break with your front brakes, the bike’s weight is transferred to the front. Rear brake application is more useful during low speed maneuvering.

Use this as an approximate guide for braking: Slow speeds up to about 10 mph, you can use your rear brake. Speeds above 10 mph, you can use your front brake lever. Now, in any case where you need to come to a quick and sudden stop — USE BOTH BRAKES!! It’s been proven that using both brakes in an ’emergency stop’ can cut the stopping distance by more than half.

Clutch

Now the left side:

The clutch is the lever just forward of the left hand grip. Sportbikes typically only require only a two-fingered operation (or pull of the lever), while other bikes like the cruisers and touring motorcycles typically require your whole hand to pull the lever and engage the clutch. The clutch is used as a way to connect and disconnect the engine from the transmission. If you’ve ever ridden a stick shift in a car, you understand what I’m referring to. In essence, when you pull in the clutch lever, you’re cutting off the power to the rear wheel and bike will coast as if it’s in neutral even if you’re in a specific gear. Once you release the clutch, the engine kicks in and if you’re in gear, and will power the rear wheel.

I’d suggest you practice this part before you ride off for the first time. Practice by gradually and slowly pulling the clutch with your left hand. Don’t think of it as off or on. You need to find that spot where the engine begins to engage. Each bike is different, so you have to find that ‘sweet spot’. I’ll give you more info when we get to starting the bike and riding off.

Shifting

Motorcycles shift differently than cars. The thought process is the same (Pull clutch/throttle off, shift, release clutch/accelerate), the motorcycle shifting is handled by moving the left foot lever (shifter) up or down with the left foot. The typical shift patters for motorcycles are:

— 6th gear (if applicable to your bike)

— 5th gear

— 4th gear

— 3rd gear

— 2nd gear

— Neutral

— 1st gear

Most motorcycles fit this pattern, which is referred to as the “1 down, 5 up” or “1 down, 4 up”. Finding neutral with your left foot will take some getting used to, but you’ll pick it up pretty quick. The gauge in front of you will have a green “N” that will indicate you are in Neutral. There have been comments and arguments from all over stating that you can shift without using the clutch and it won’t hurt anything. I agree that you CAN shift without using the clutch. My argument is that you SHOULD use the clutch when you shift. Over the long haul of your motorcycle, it will be worth it to use the clutch every time.

I mentioned it earlier with shifting, but here’s how the shift should be done: If at a complete stop, pull in the clutch with your left hand, shift down to first gear with your left foot, ease off the clutch until you feel the motorcycle moving forward and give it a little throttle. If you are already moving, pull in the clutch with your left hand and ease back on the throttle with your right hand, shift gears with your left foot, ease off of the clutch your left hand and twist the throttle to continue the acceleration. I know it sounds like a lot to remember, but when you’re moving, everything happens quickly. Some happen simultaneously. Pull clutch/throttle off, shift, release clutch/throttle on.

Starting it up

Ok, we’ve covered a lot of functionality of the motorcycle, and now we’re going to ‘fire it up’ and start the engine. Most motorcycles these days no longer need to be kick started. We all have that image of the biker jumping up and thrusting his leg down to get the bike started. Not anymore. Here are the steps to follow to start up your engine:

— If you have a choke on your bike, pull it out completely

— Turn the key to the ignition position (you’ll see all the gauges come on)

— Flip the red kill switch down to the on position

— Hold in the clutch (not necessary if you’re in Neutral, but a good habit to just ‘make sure’.)

— Push the engine start button (black button located below the red kill switch)

— Slowly release the clutch (make sure you’re in Neutral – the green N will be lit up)

If you have a carbureted bike, you may need to twist the throttle a little to get gas into the cylinders. If it’s fuel injected, there is no need to throttle.

Warming up/Choke

Warming up a car engine is basically a thing of the past. But a motorcycle engine requires the rider to trust the engine will perform at its optimal level and therefore, must be warmed up before taking off and riding. Once the engine has turned over, allow it to sit idle for a minute to several minutes, and do not rev the engine during this time. Revving the engine can cause issues as the oil may not get properly distributed to the moving parts. Again, if your bike has a choke, begin pushing the choke back in until the motorcycle is idling properly and not sputtering. You’ll get used to the sound of your engine and will easily know when the engine is warmed up. You can use the temperature gauge as a general guide that your motorcycle is warmed up and only start off when you’re confident your engine won’t sputter or fail because it’s not properly warmed up.

Kickstand

Today, most motorcycles have an automatic shut-off if you try to put the bike into gear while the kickstand is down. So, before you attempt to switch into first gear, balance the bike while sitting on it, and use your left heel to pull the kickstand up into place. If you have a bike that has a center-stand, the process is quite different. You’ll need to stand up while straddling the bike and rock the bike forward in order to get the stand retracted.

Now let’s get riding!

Get going

Now that you’ve gone through all the preliminary steps of making sure you’re wearing the proper gear, checked the bike over to make sure no issues (T-CLOCS), are now comfortable with where the controls are, how to shift, how to brake, etc., you are now ready to ride!

Here are some of my suggestions for getting the feel and taking it slow: Practice where the clutch engages the engine – pull the clutch all the way in, and shift down into first gear. Hold it there and relax. Very smoothly and slowly, start releasing the clutch. At a point somewhere halfway between pulling it all the way in and having it all the way out, you should feel the bike start to lurch forward. This is the ‘sweet spot’ where the clutch engages the engine/transmission and the rear wheel begins to move.

Now take your time and just play with this feeling. Let the clutch out slightly until the bike moves forward, then pull it back in. Do it again. Do it again. Get comfortable with this feeling.

Ok, now that you’ve got the feel for where the clutch engages, now it’s time to move. As the motorcycle begins to move forward, twist the throttle with your right hand just slightly to give it some gas and you will start moving forward. Once you start moving, pull those feet up onto the pegs. Get comfortable moving with the bike. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to keep the bike stable once moving forward. Once you’re moving at a rate of up to about 10-12 miles per hour, you’ll hear and feel your engine race and you’ll need to pull in the clutch/close the throttle, shift upward with your left foot (pump it upward), release the clutch and twist the throttle to accelerate. It may sound like a lot to do in little time, but trust me, it’ll come naturally with practice. Do the same (Pull clutch/close throttle, shift up, release clutch/twist throttle) to pump the shifter up again to get into 3rd, etc. You also do the same to downshift the bike into a lower gear, except instead of pumping the shifter upward you are pumping it downward. To come to a very controlled and steady stop, you can downshift your way and let the engine do the slowing for you. Again, practice this and it will come naturally to you.

Turning

Now you’re a rider…but wait, what about turning the motorcycle!? Have you ever ridden a bicycle? Ok, if you have, it’s almost the same with turning a motorcycle. Anything under approximately 8-10 mph, you actually turn the handlebars to steer the motorcycle. Once you get over about 8-10 mph, there’s a lean that’s involved. Say your motorcycle is at 35 mph and you’re coming up to a right hand turn. Slow the bike down and downshift to where you are comfortable BEFORE you get to the turn (use 2nd gear as an example). Say you’re now at 12mph as you enter the turn. Push the right handlebar to the left slightly and lean to the right to make the right turn. Yes, I said that correctly. With your right hand, you push the right side handlebar slightly to the left to make a right hand turn. Push left, lean right, go right. It’s called countersteering and it works. Most bikers will tell you ‘that’s not right’, but trust me, they are doing this exact thing and sometimes don’t realize it. And if you take the safety course, they will cover this subject.
