The Physics Of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are used for vision correction and are placed on the cornea of the eye. They do the same corrective function that conventional spectacles, or glasses, do. However, in comparison, they are very light in weight and are, for all purposes, invisible. Contact lenses help form the image on the retina of the eye by either converging or diverging the rays of light entering the eye.

Earlier contact lenses were made of glass, and were scleral lenses. Scleral lenses are large contact lenses that cover the complete sclera – the white outer coating – of the eye. These unwieldy lenses could only be worn for a short period at a time. With the development of PPMA – polymethyl methacrylate – in the 1930s, plastics were first used in contact lenses. These were in fact, hybrid scleral lenses, made with the combination of both, glass and plastic, in 1936.

By the 1950s, much smaller contact lenses were developed that covered only the cornea of the eye and not the whole eye.

Types of Vision Impairments

One of the major uses of contact lenses is to correct visual defects. The general impairments are Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism, and Presbyopia.

  • Myopia – is a visual disability where the image of the object seen is formed in front of the retina. During this visual impairment, one can see objects that are near, and not the distant objects, which appear blurred. This defect is also known as nearsightedness. This is a very common impairment, with over 25 percent of the adults in the United States suffering from it. The defect can be corrected by the use of concave contact lenses.
  • Hyperopia – It is also known as Hypermetropia, and the image of the object is formed behind the retina. Far objects can be seen clearly, and the near objects appear to be blurred. Hyperopia is more commonly known as farsightedness, and more than 13 percent of the children in the United States, in the age group 5 to 17, suffer from it. The defect can be corrected by the use of convex contact lenses.
  • Astigmatism – This happens when the lens of the eye has more than one focal point, in different meridians. Astigmatic people cannot see in fine detail, and need cylindrical lenses to correct their impairment. Nearly 34 percent of American children in the age group 5 to 17 have this impairment.
  • Presbyopia – This is an impairment, which comes with age, generally after the age of 40. The impairment develops as the lens of the eye loses its elasticity. Bifocal contact lenses are used to correct this vision defect.

Lenses Used For Vision Correction

In the case of normal vision, the light from the object hits the cornea and focuses on the retina. Due to some refractive error, at times the light from the object does not focus on the retina, but either in front of it, or behind it. To correct this refractive error, contact lenses are used to focus on to the retina.

The type of contact lenses used depends on the type of vision impairment, and how much refractive error is involved. How much the lens bends the light to focus on the retina is measured in diopters (D).

Myopia occurs when the light is focused in front of the retina, as the eyeball is longer than normal. To correct this impairment, which is also known as nearsightedness, a concave lens is used. This lens is thinner at the center, and helps move the focus ahead, towards the retina.

To correct this vision impairment, the curvature in the concave contact lenses is determined by the measurement in diopters. The larger the number of diopters, larger is the vision defect. In myopia, the diopter number is preceded by a minus (-) sign, denoting that the focus is short of the retina.

In the case of hyperopia, the light is focused beyond the retina. Hyperopia is also known as farsightedness, as distant objects are seen clearly in this impairment. The eyeball is shorter than normal, and a convex lens is used to correct this vision defect. The contact lens used is thicker in the center, and helps move the focus back onto the retina.

In this case, too, the curvature required in the convex contact lenses is determined by the measurement in diopters. The diopter number is preceded by the plus (+) sign, denoting that the focus is beyond the retina.

The lenses used for the correction of myopia and hyperopia are categorized as spherical contact lenses.

When the cornea is irregularly shaped, the light from the object falling on the cornea focuses on more than one point. This distortion of the image is called astigmatism. Special lenses need to be designed, based on the individual’s distortion of image. These lenses are known as toric lenses.

Though toric lenses are made of the same materials as the spherical lenses, they are specifically designed to suit individual impairments. These lenses have different curvatures, thicker in some places, and thinner in others. These lenses are designed to correct astigmatism and myopia or hyperopia, if required.

For the correction of presbyopia, special bifocal lenses are required, as the person suffering from it requires both correction for nearsightedness and farsightedness. In such lenses, either the correction for near impairment is placed in the center of the lens, with the distant correction on the outside, or vice versa.

Types Of Contact Lenses

The initial lenses were rigid lenses that did not absorb water. This kept the oxygen from passing into the cornea of the eye, causing eye irritation and other discomforts.

Then came the soft contact lenses made from hydrogel, which allowed oxygen to pass through them to the cornea. These lenses came to be known as ‘breathable’ contact lenses. This made it possible for contact lenses to be worn comfortably and for longer periods. Today, there are:

Daily wear lenses, which are removed at night.

Extended wear lenses that can be worn for extended periods without removing.

Disposable lenses that can be discarded after a day, a week, or a few weeks.

In addition, there are color contacts, which are for cosmetic purpose.

Strength Training For Rapid Weight Loss

Your strength training options

Gyms are the first place people think of when they want to do strength training because of all the available equipment. But it is also possible to keep your workouts at home if you have various types of tension bands, they work just as well! Hand weights also work well if you are just beginning plus you can even use your own body weight by doing push-ups, sit ups crunches and leg squats.

Starting out

It is always important to begin your workout session with about 5 – 10 Minutes of warming up using gentle cardio like walking or stretching. Start your workout routine with 12 reps of a lighter weight before moving onto the heavier weights, and then move to heavier weights until the 12th rep tires you out!

A good rule of thumb when you want to increase the weight you’re working with is to increase the weight in 10% increments.

When you are starting out with strength training, try and aim for about 2 – 3 sessions a week, that will be more than enough for you to start building lean muscle. It is also only natural to feel some soreness during your workout but never pain, so if you ever feel sensations of pain, stop immediately to prevent injury.

Like I said earlier, you don’t necessarily have to be Mr. Muscle in order to benefit from strength training, just as long as you have some lean body muscle, it will go a long way towards helping you lose weight. And remember to always give yourself one full rest day for every muscle group that you have trained!

The Study Schedule That Got Me a 254 on the USMLE Step 1

Every one has a strategy, everyone has advice. The important thing to ask yourself when studying for the USMLE is what study strategies work for you? I stayed very faithful to what works for me. Here are the 5 questions I asked of myself when deciding how to tackle studying.

#1) What kind of a learner am I?

There are visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic learners. A visual learner learns by seeing information in diagrams, charts, graphics, etc. An auditory learner are the annoying people who can just sit through lectures and remember everything. They also learn well in group study sessions, by repeating things aloud, listening to podcasts, etc). The kinesthetic (or tactile) learner likes hands-on learning, practice, teaching someone, performing questions, etc.

While many people are a combination, I knew that I was a visual learner. If I’m trying to get someplace and my GPS in my phone has been dismantled by elves, if someone tells me directions, I’ll get lost (so I’m clearly not an auditory learner). Even if I’ve driven someplace before, I can get lost (so not quite a kinesthetic learner). However, draw me a map and I’ll never forget where I’m going. Never in a million years. Knowing this I knew how to proceed.

#2) Realistically, how much time can I spend in a day studying?

The answer for me was 6 hours. I knew this from medical school. No matter how I cut it, whether doing 6 hours all at once or 2 hours in the morning, afternoon, and evening, my mind would begin to shut down after 6 hours. That was just me.

#3) What are the resources for which I have time?

Time is your most valuable resource before the USMLE. Therefore, I went with one main resource: First aid for the boards. Theoretically, if you know every word of that book, you will do well. I augmented this with two other books. The books were (1) BRS Pathology, and (2) Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. Some people swear by Guillon audiotapes, but I am not an auditory learner, so I ignored them. Then of course you need a question bank (Qbank or USMLE World).

#4) What strategy will assure memory retention?

There is no sense studying something if you are going to forget it the next day. As a visual learner, the key to my learning is to write stuff down and re-organize it so I could see it visually. So I did my tried and true 3-exposure learning technique which got me through most of M1 year:

Exposure 1: Read & highlight

Exposure 2: Write out charts, graphs, mneumonics, etc.

Learning theory says this step should happen within 24-hours of exposure 1.

Exposure 3: Try questions to test knowledge.

Keep track of persisting mistakes.

Rinse and repeat for the areas in which you continue to test poorly.

#5) What will my schedule be… so when I should I schedule my exam?

The USMLE-study schedule is a gut-wrenching thing to write. I found solice in two things: Math & Flexibility.

Math: After making a list of all the topics (essentially the Table of content in First Aid), I figured out how long each topic would take me. For example: The Cardiology section is 30 pages long.

Exposure 1: Read & highlight will take me about 1 hour at 2 minutes a page.

Exposure 2: Write out, write out, write out will take me twice as long (2 hrs)

Exposure 3: Questions for me was 50 questions = 3 hours to review

I review only a few questions, but in great detail. Therefore, if I wanted to do the reading and at least 150 Cardiology practice question, it would take me two 6-hour days. I repeated this scheduling method for each topic and put it on a calendar. And, yes, time spent organizing is never time wasted.

Flexibility: After 2 NBME practice exams (one at 1.5 weeks and the other at 3 weeks), I adjusted my schedule to allow for more time studying subjects in which I was weak. For those subjects, I would go back to more in-depth resources such as BRS pathology and Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple and would double the number of practice questions (I was usually completing about half of the available questions).

Finally, I always scheduled in 1-2 days a week as pop-off valves for topics that needed more attention.

Schedule your exam based off of the estimated time you calculate that will need. Adjust your schedule based on your weaknesses, but try not to linger too long on a particular subject. If your day for endocrinology runs out, for instance, move on and pencil it in for your “pop-of valve” day. Near the end, a lot of people get burnt out. Eventually your brain reaches its limit and the stuff that goes in, pushes other stuff out. At this point, there is no sense delaying the test. Trust your method and stick to the strategies that work for you.

Is a Chiropractor a Real Doctor?


A chiropractic doctor is probably one of the most misunderstood healthcare practitioners in the medical profession. Through the years they have been looked at askance by doubters who are full of suspicion. In times past, they have been called quacks, or worse. This is due, in part, to the public’s narrow and limited view of medical treatment – being that solely of administering prescription drugs and performing surgery.

After they had broken up they had obviously still talked, either about there relationship of for the sake of their daughter Hailie who means more to Eminem then anyone in the world at this point of his life. I wanted to be a family to Kim and Hailie and raise my daughter the right way and not cut on her like my father did to me. My family is all I have ever fought for and all I’ve ever tried to protect. She’s always been out to get me, and now she knows I have money so she won’t leave be alone. I know that’s not a nice thing to say about your mother, but unfortunately it’s true. His mom on the other he can’t seem to forgive because of all of the grief and trouble that she has put him threw.

Eminem has psychologically turned 360 degrees throughout his life. From the fighting and confusion with his mother, never meeting his father to being one the biggest success stories in rap history. The best example is an experiment of Eminems anger management, after he had started to rise he would get opinions from people saying “Your white, why are you rapping” & “Go play Rock and Role” and he said that drove him angrier and angrier and he emphasized it throughout his lyrics. What Is a TENS Unit?

Insomnia from Leg Cramps and RLS

There are chronic muscular, neurological, and psychological conditions that contribute to insomnia. One is Restless Legs Syndrome, another is a sudden panic reaction caused by “missing a step”, the sensation of the foot hitting nothing as you fall and happens upon entering sleep. In the case of the latter the jolt of panic causes hyperventilation and a secretion of adrenalin that will keep a person awake for another hour or two.
