What’s Best For Goiter

Goiter is the swelling of the thyroid gland which commonly occurs in women. It may follow the development of benign nodules or in rare cases may be triggered by benign or malignant tumors or an iodine deficiency. Some people develop goiter as a result of taking certain drugs, especially those that are used to treat manic-depressive states and diabetes.

Simple goiter is caused by an iodine deficiency which is common in those who live far from the sea. Iodine is required for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. This can easily be obtained from iodized salt, seafood, milk and kelp. When a person lacks iodine, the thyroid gland has to work harder to continuously produce a hormone that the body needs to function properly. In the process, the gland gets bigger and that’s how goiter begins.

If the enlarged thyroid gland produces an extra hormone to make up for the shortage of iodine, the goiter is called “toxic.” A “nontoxic” goiter means no extra hormone is being made. Aside from the enlarged gland, other symptoms of simple goiter are dry thick skin, retarded growth, deafness and lethargy.

Obviously, the best way to prevent this problem is by taking iodine-rich foods. But sometimes, even if a person gets enough iodine from his diet, he or she may still develop goiter. This is because certain foods may actually prevent the thyroid gland from using the iodine. Foods which interfere with the body’s ability to manufacture the thyroid hormone contain substances called “goitrogens.”

“These include Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, peaches, peas, soy beans, spinach and turnips. If eaten in large quantities regularly, these can cause iodine deficiency. This is characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) and sluggish metabolism – tending to cause weight gain. A deficiency during pregnancy can cause fetal growth retardation and mental retardation and deficiency during childhood can cause growth stunting. Cooking goitrogenic-containing foods inactivate these toxic substances to a great degree,” according to Dr. Myron Winick, director of the Institute of Human Nutrition Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, in “The Columbia Encyclopedia of Nutrition.”

If you feel hot in spite of the cold weather, you could be suffering from hyperthyroidism or the over activity of the thyroid gland that may also be ac¬companied by goiter. This condition is also known as exophthalmic goiter because it is characterized by protruding or bulging eyes.

“The affected person tires easily, complains of the heat, is physically and mentally overactive, and shows a fine tremor of outstretched fingers. The symptoms are due to an oversecretion of the thyroid hormone and are similar to those of thyroid overdosage. Other symptoms include excessive sweating, weakness, muscular wasting, morbid apprehensiveness, frequent bowel movements, and rapid and irregular heartbeats,” ex¬plained the late Dr. Morris Rshbein, the former editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, in his “Popular Illustrated Medical Encylopedia.”

Depending on your condition, age, and the size of the thyroid itself, goiter may be treated either with drugs to shrink the thyroid gland, radioactive iodine or surgery. Discuss these options with the doctor for each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Surgery is usually offered as a last resort when other measures have failed or if the patient is unable to benefit from the above options.

“Patients sometimes want the excess goiter tissue removed for cosmetic reasons. Also, the goiter may have to be excised if it becomes so large as to compress nearby structures, causing coughing, hoarseness and difficulty in swallowing. But remember a goiter is rarely malignant. You should have it operated on only if its appearance disturbs you, if you suffer pressure symptoms from it or possibly because it’s toxic. If surgery is recommended, ask for a second opinion from an endocrinologist,” said Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the .New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center in “Second Opinion.”

Acid Reflux and Coffee – Do They Go Hand in Hand?

An alarming number of American citizens suffer from heartburn, gastro esophageal reflux disease, ulcers and acid reflux. Foods that contain citrus, spices and dietary fats are great contributors to these ailments. What many don’t know is the negative effects regarding existing acid reflux and coffee. Caffeine is, also, a contributor toward the increased sufferings of acid reflux as it’s known to aggravate these existing conditions by promoting hyperacidity within the stomach and digestive tracts.

Some people experience occurrences of acid reflux so infrequently that they might forget the last time and incident happened. Other people, though, suffer from it much more frequently, even having acid indigestion more than once a day!

It’s common for those suffering for acid reflux to depend solely on antacids and medications to relieve such an ailment. Many of these people, though, don’t realize that a slight change in diet can produce the same results, such as reducing the amounts of coffee they drink.

Acid reflux is the occurrence of acid from the stomach is forced up into the esophagus, generally known as heartburn. This only occurs, though, when the esophageal sphincter weakens. The esophageal sphincter is a encircling muscle between the esophagus and the stomach. Studies have proven that there exists a very close association with the ingestion of caffeine, especially in high quantities, and the negative effects of heartburn.

Most people that hear the word caffeine automatically associate the term with coffee. What remains unknown to a lot of people, though, is that caffeine is also present in such tasty delights as cocoa, tea, aerated beverages and chocolate. People might reduce their coffee intake, but continue normal ingestion of the others. This, of course, only helps slightly. As acid reflux worsens, it becomes what is known as gastro esophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

The common ailments associated with GERD are as follows. Chest pain, bleeding, stricture of the esophagus, Barrett’s esophagus, swallowing complications and choking. Now, the inability to decrease caffeine intake is not the only way to increase the harmful effects of acid reflux, becoming GERD, but consuming alcoholic beverages and pregnancy have been known to be as equal a culprit.

Caffeinated products tend to increase the process that empties gastric acid from the body which, after time, damages the tissue of the intestines. Obviously, then, to reduce this process, the sufferer must decrease their consumption of caffeine in order to, hopefully, reverse this unwelcome ailment. As in anything, though, unless a person is addicted to such things and must seek professional assistance in order to decrease this unnecessary intake, it’s best to just cut caffeine from the diet altogether.

Begin by altering your diet. Substitute caffeinated products with non-caffeinated products. Acid reflux and coffee can prove to be a painful combination. Soy is an excellent substitute. Herbal coffees also make for great alternatives. Not only can you decrease, or reverse, the negative effects of acid reflux by removing caffeine from your diet, but you’ll also notice a substantial decrease from chronic stress, adrenaline exhaustion and any other ailments that are associated with caffeine. There’s nothing to lose but ailments, themselves.

How to Cure Genital Herpes Blisters

Blisters are the most obvious symptoms of genital herpes, a type of sexually-transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex virus. Genital herpes blisters are generally painful and filled with liquid. When the blisters break open, they can cause the patient more pain. They appear on the on and around the genital area and the rectum. Once a person gets infected, it will stay in the body’s system forever. The person will experience outbreaks from time and time and can be subdued by taking medication.

To cure genital herpes blisters, it is best to consult the doctor about it. He will be the one to determine if you do have herpes or not. After some tests, the doctor will prescribe the right medication. These medications will help soothe the pain of the blisters and alleviate the other symptoms that you may have. Aside from blisters, infected persons also experience fever, nausea and muscle pain. Women will experience painful vaginal discharges. The most common medications prescribed by doctors are acyclovir, famciclovir and valacyclovir.

Aside from medications, there are natural remedies that can help cure genital herpes blisters.

-Avoid taking drugs that can depress the immune system. These include nicotine and caffeine. Stay away from alcohol because it can greatly reduce the body’s oxygen and nutrients.

-Avoid too much sun exposure. Patients are allowed 20 minutes of exposure to early sunlight, but nothing more than that. The skin needs the vitamin D that comes from morning sunlight, but too much exposure can irritate the skin and can cause further damage to healing process.

-Take a bath in warm water at least twice a day. Use clean water and make sure to use unscented bath products. It’s best to use natural herbal soaps which can help make the blisters heal faster.

-Tea tree oil helps fight off infections and makes the skin heal faster. Apply 4 to 5 drops of tea tree oil to sores before bedtime.

-Eat foods rich in lysine, an important amino acid that can provide collagen to the body. This will help the skin stay healthy even during a herpes outbreak. Foods rich in lysine include eggs, tofu, soybeans and lean organic beef.

-Drinks lots of carrot juice. Carrot juice will help the body tremendously in alkalizing the body during outbreaks. It detoxes the body and gets rids of toxins that make the sores worse.

-Wear loose and comfortable clothing to help the skin breathe and stay fresh. Blisters need to be aired for it to dry faster. Wearing tight clothing will only trap sweat and bacteria which can make the blisters worse.

Persons infected with genital herpes blisters are advised to refrain from any sexual activity during an outbreak, when sores and lesions are very much visible. There is a very high risk that they will pass on the virus to their partners. Using condoms does not guarantee safe protection; condoms cannot cover all areas with blisters. Pregnant women who have symptoms of herpes should inform the doctor immediately, for she can transmit the virus to her unborn child. To prevent catching the virus in the first place, always practice safe sex.

Lymphedema Pump

Lymphedema causes excess of lymph fluid to lie stagnant in the certain parts of the body, generally the limbs thereby causing swellings. Lymphedema pumps are exclusively used to get rid of the excess lymphatic fluid that is collected in the limbs and is sent back to the cardiovascular system. This systems helps flush out all the toxic materials that gather in the tissues of the individuals body. The pump treatment is a professional treatment that needs to be carried out under the supervision of the therapists.

The lymphedema pump treatment consists of two phases in the treatment which is the preparation and the drainage stage. Preparatory stage is nothing but the Manual Lymph Drainage therapy which firstly makes sure that the lymphatic vessels are prepared to take off the fluid by draining it through the pumping process. This is an important phase and if not done well the lymphatic vessel is not prepared to remove the excess lymph fluid.

This could even cause additional damage since sometimes the fluid can spill over to the other tissues that surround it.

The lymphedema pump in the drainage phase needs to be set so that the right pressure is applied before the garment is added on. Once the pump is put on, it automatically starts working for the period of time you set it for. The pump works gently and simulates the fluid that has gathered excessively in a particular limb and sends it back into the lymphatic vessel, which takes it to the bloodstream for purification.

The two types of lymphedema pump that are available are sequential gradient pump and the flexitouch pump. The sequential gradient pump is automated and pushes air into the garment it is fixed into. This gently creates a pumping kind of motion which helps regulate the flow of lymph. FlexiTouch pump aids in taking care of both the phases of treatment.

Stomach Problems? – Avoid the Least Digestive Foods For Better Digestion!

If your having stomach problems, you may need to change your diet to incorporate the most digestive foods and to avoid the least digestive foods. In this article I will give the foods that are hardest to digest. Avoiding them should make a great improvement in your digestive comfort level.

Five Foods Hardest To Digest

Musical Fruit (Beans)

I have had stomach problems for years, but have been able to get everything under control through eating the right foods in the right way. However, there is one food that I still have to watch out for … beans.

Beans are very difficult to digest. Beans are one of the least digestive foods largely because it takes a certain kind of enzyme to break them down and most people do not have much of this enzyme to work with.

However, over the last year, I have slowly incorporated beans into my diet and have noticed that I do a lot better with them than I used to. But I still have to be careful.

The moral of the story … if you want to eat beans, start with very small amounts and gradually work up larger portions over a long period of time. Otherwise, you will pay with gas and pain.

Bread Products

You would think that bread would be one of the easiest foods to digest. After all, it's so soft and good. However, when you chew bread and swallow it, it turns into a hard ball. The big problem with bread is that it has no digestive enzymes like many other foods do. For instance, raw vegetables have natural enzymes built into them.

And if you have gluten intolerance, bread can really become the enemy of your digestive system. So try staying away from bread for a while and see if your stomach feels better as a result.

Milk Products

Milk, ice cream, and especially cheese can be very difficult on the digestive system. Cheese is the worst. It takes the average healthy person approximately five hours to digest cheese.

The problem with all milk products is that it has "lactose" and most people are lactose intolerant. Lactose is a milk sugar that exists in all natural milk products.

As you grow older (past your teems), you have a much more probability of being lactose intolerant. That's a terrible thing if you are like me and love your ice cream. I try to stay away from ice cream, but I do not always succeed. And when I do eat it, I pay for the next morning in the bathroom.

Fatty Meat Products

Meat is fairly hard to digest in the first place, but if you ad fat, it becomes extremely hard to digest. So if you are going to eat meat, go for the leaner cuts.

I love my meat, so I have to be careful with the fat. But I also love fish, which digests a lot easier than red meat. My only problem is that prefer my fish sauteed in extra virgin olive oil. At least olive oil is good for you, but too much can still be hard on the stomach.

If you have a compromised digestive system, avoiding the above hard-to-digest foods will be a wise choice.

Changes in Diet and Exercise Better Than Prescription Drugs for Preventing Heart Attack Recurrence

Heart disease is an ailment of modern civilization and behavior – and it's one, therefore, that can be treated effectively and with dramatic results by making fairly simple lifestyle changes. People in African villages do not need bypass operations. Studies have consistently shown that rates of heart disease are higher in Western cultures, that heart disease rates go up in countries that adopt Western diet and lifestyles, and that modifications of diet reduce heart disease. Some of the differences may not be attributable to the diet per se, but rather to how food is raised and the industrialization of American agriculture (eg the effects of corn fed versus pasture fed animals). However it is clear that the majority of heart disease is caused by factors associated with Western Civilization, such as poor diet and a lack of exercise.

There are also "non-medical" factors not directly related to lifestyle that increase the risk for heart disease, like low income, lack of social support, depression, marginalization in society, and stress in childhood. I can not fix all of these social ills with this book, but I just want you to understand that it is not as simple as a "one disease, one pill" kind of thing.

Exercising for just 30 minutes a day reduces your risk of developing heart disease by 30%. This can include anything from running, playing tennis, or just vigorous walking. And there is no need to obtain a minimal heart rate. If you are older and do not run or play a sport you should incorporate a daily 30 minute walk into your routine. That is better for you than statins by any measure. And there are no hidden side effects of exercise that we do not know about yet, other than spraining your ankle.

If you have risk factors and do not yet have heart disease, you should address them. Improving your diet will help you lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. In fact, following the low fat diet advocated by the National Cholesterol Education Program lowers LDL cholesterol equally well as treatment with a statin, with no side effects (Jenkins et al 2005).

The so-called Mediterranean Diet (vegetables, legumes, fruit, cereals, and fish) reduces heart disease risk and prolongs life (Trichopoulou et al 2005). Patients with heart disease who followed the Mediterranean diet had a 50-70% reduction on recurrent heart attacks (de Lorgeril et al 1999). These results are twice as good as any medication.

It's a pretty simple diet to follow over the long term. Eat at least one serving of fruit every day, which I define as one apple, one banana, one peach, one cup of blueberries, and so on. Have three or four servings of vegetables every day – a cup of broccoli, two or three cups of leafy greens, a cup of tomatoes, etc. Five to seven one cup or 2 ounce servings of whole grains, beans, and starch such as cracked wheat, whole-wheat pasta, lentils, and sweet potatoes should also be consumed on a daily basis. Meat and other animal proteins, like eggs and dairy, should be limited to once or twice a week. People who followed this diet had mortality cut in half over a four year time period. This diet substitutes unsaturated fats (olive and nut oils) for saturated fats (butter, animal fat), and also includes wine and nuts. In fact, olive oil has been shown in laboratory studies to improve endothelial function (Translation: increases the flexibility of your coronary arteries, which can be beneficial for reducing your risk of heart attacks).

You may have heard about the recent Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study which showed that a low fat diet did not reduce heart disease (Howard et al 2006). The problem with that study is that it lumped all fats together. We now know that some fats are better than others. For example there are fats in things like olive oil and fish that actually promote good health. As an example of that, the generic low fat diet of WHI reduced LDL cholesterol by only 10 points, whereas a diet high in fruits and vegetables, soy, and nuts, and low in animal fat, dropped cholesterol by 30%, which was equivalent to the effects found with a statin (33%) (Jenkins et al 2005).

The low carb diet does not prevent heart disease. Look at the doctor who developed it-he died of a heart attack. Women from the Nurse's Health Study (82,802) filled out questionnaires about diet and then were followed for 20 years. Low carbohydrate intake was not associated with reduced heart disease. Eating a high sugar diet increased the risk of heart disease by 90%. High vegetable intake was associated with a 30% reduction in heart disease (Halton et al 2006).

Eating fish is good for your heart; beware of eating a lot of fish high in mercury (a pollutant that gets into fish), like swordfish and tuna, during pregnancy, as it can cause birth defects. Foods that are a part of the Mediterranean diet like fish, olive oil, and nuts, increase "good" HDL cholesterol and reduce the "bad" LDL cholesterol. These foods are high in omega-3 fatty acids (like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and low in omega-6 fatty acids). It is often pointed out that ancient diets had a ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 of 1: 1 whereas current diets have much higher amounts of omega-6, largely through the substitution of calories in the forms of leafy plants with grains and seeds.

When I was a medical student at Duke in 1985, I distinctly remember sitting on the front porch of my house in Durham, North Carolina, and reading The New England Journal of Medicine, where an article described how the Inuit people of the Arctic, who had a diet high in fish and low in meat, had much lower rates of heart disease. That observation led to the idea that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish prevented heart disease, which naturally led aggressive marketers to try and put it in a pill or a bottle and sell it. However there is a lot of stuff in fish and it is not clear what it is exactly you get out of it in terms of health benefit (or what you avoid by eating fish instead of other stuff).

Child Obesity Facts and Treatment

Now day’s parents are worried because of their child obesity problems and number of over weight children is increasing day by day. Fattiness in children not only makes them to feel inferior but also causes many harmful diseases in small age like diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, and many more diseases can be gathered around them. Access weight can bring them in depression also. Children’s always take a tension that they are fatty.

Major Causes of Child Obesity

Children take junk food, specifically food with low nutrition and high calories. The physical activities of the children have also reduced as they misuse more time with computers, playing video games and television.

Facts of childhood obesity :-

  • Carelessness in food, alarming increase in the number of children and teenagers developing Type-2 Diabetes (also termed as adult-onset diabetes) due to being overweight.
  • High levels of cholesterol and high blood pressure, that are some main risk factors for development of heart diseases are found in most of the obese children.
  • Sleep Apnea is considered as the most severe problem faced by obese children. In the sleep apnea (interruption of breath while sleeping) may lead to other problems like difficulty in learning and memory.
  • Overweight children are on higher risk of developing liver diseases, orthopedic problems and asthma.
  • 70% oboist teenagers retain their overweight and obese condition even during their adulthood.

Treatment Options

Some of the treatment options of Child Obesity include:

  • Healthy eating – Nutritional diet makes your child healthy not fatty. Be supportive to him to make them take care of their diet and physical activities.
  • Less Overeating – Avoid high calories food and low nutritional food for your children.
  • Participate in Physical Activities – Encourage your children to participate in physical activities rather than engaging themselves in entertaining activities that result in overweight condition in childhood which may also follow during adulthood.

Help your child

Parents have to play active role in ensuring that their child does not become overweight.

  • Never neglect overweight child. If you accept your child the way he is, the chances are more that the child will accept the condition and feel good about them.
  • Never ignore you child. Let his express his feelings about his overweight condition. They can assess their overweight condition better than anybody else.
  • Help your child loose overweight.

Most Effective option to get rid of Child Obesity

One of the most effective methods of treating and preventing child obesity for the parents is to encourage their child for engaging in physical activities

  • Encourage your child to participate in sports activities like, cricket basketball, dance or gymnastics and many more
  • Give time to your child to do active tasks like vacuuming, watering plants, making beds etc Also plan active outings like visit to zoo or walking through parks

Children are first-rate learners and pick up quickly what they see. You must project yourself as a role model by adhering to healthy eating habits and regular physical activities. They will surely follow you.

How To Get Rid Of Poison Ivy

Catching Poison Ivy is not a fun experience. Most people do not realize they are even allergic to Poison Ivy until it is too late. Poison Ivy rashes may develop several days after exposure to the plant. Many people think Poison Ivy rashes are just normal rashes that they have developed over time.

Poison Ivy is a seasonal type rash. Most people contract poison ivy by touching the poison ivy or other similar plant species.

Poison Ivy is found in every state in the US except Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Oregon, Washington, North Dakota, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, Neveda and Wyoming.

Posion Oak is found only in the following states which are California, Neveda, Oregon and Washington.

Poison Sumac also has a wide distribution. It is found in Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and the rest of the eastern US states.

The best way to identify Poison Ivy is to look for the maple leaf.

The best way to identify Poison Oak is look for shiny red or green leafs. The plant looks pretty similar to Poison Ivy.

Signs and Symptoms of Fibroid Tumors

Fibroid tumors are non-malignant tumors that are made of fibrous or connective tissue. They can grow in organs of the body which contains smooth muscle cells but they are often found in a woman's uterus. Hormonal imbalance plays a major role in the formation of fibroid tumors although the real cause is still unknown. Most of the time, fibroids occur as multiple tumor masses which are slow-growing and often cause no symptoms.

Symptoms may differ greatly. Some women are completely asymptomatic which means they show no evidence of disease, their fibroids are usually immaterial in size. Most women experience at least one of the following complaints or side effects:

– Dull or Severe pelvic pain
– Bloating or fullness
– Painful menstruation
– Increased menstrual flow and clots
– Irregular period
– Increased urinary frequency
– Constipation

The occurrence of one or more of the symptoms does not consequentially mean that a fibroid tumor is present. Fibroids are commonly detected during a pelvic exam, the uterus then has a large and irregular shape. This is usually confirmed by ultrasound and sometimes CT scan.

The treatment for fibroid tumor is decided on an individual basis, it varies for every person. Most women do not require treatment at all. There are traditional methods of having a fibroid tumor removed. These methods include: Myomectomy and Hysterectomy. Myomectomy is the surgical removal of the tumor without damaging the uterus while a Hysterectomy is the removal of part or the entire uterus. This is normally done when the complications are acute. More often than not, before your doctor tells you to have hysterectomy, every form of treatment should be tried first.

Some women do not want to consider surgery so they look for alternative treatment which is non-surgical and safer. The way to do this is by modifying your diet. Lessen your meat and dairy intake and eat more organic fruits and vegetables. The reason why you want to do this is because most of the foods we buy are processed and they have chemicals. Chemicals cause the fibroids to grow rapidly.

Bed Sores

Bed ulcers/bed sores afflict patients in hospitals throughout the world. Various means of reducing bedsores have been tried, from frequent turning to synthetic padding, but medical research has shown that one of the most effective means of reducing the occurrence of bedsores is the use of natural sheepskin padding.

Bedsores develop as a result of constant pressure on certain parts of the body, most commonly the bony protuberances such as elbows and heels. On traditional mattresses, these points come to bear inordinate amounts of body weight, because most beds lack the pressure distribution properties of memory foam or other more advanced materials.

Bedsores occur when the blood supply to the capillaries is restricted over a period of time. Bedsores are also called pressure ulcers. Since the unique character of memory foam is it’s ability to melt away from anywhere that pressure is applied, bed sores are reduced or eliminated.

Bed ridden patients in nursing home or assisted living facilities develop bed sores that can facilitate their demise. Paraplegics and quadriplegics develop localized pressure sores that can instigate life-threatening infections. Situations that impede circulation such as complications following surgery, congestive heart failure, rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral ulcers, vascular disease, and traumatic injury help cause wounds.

Bed sores are also known as pressure sores, pressure ulcers, decubiti, or decubitus ulcers. They begin as red, painful areas on the skin (often the legs and backside) and may turn purple or even black if undetected or untreated. In some cases, bed sores can lacerate and become infected, causing further medical problems.

Bed sores pose a threat to anyone facing long periods of bed rest or bed confinement, or anyone who is immobilized or handicapped. Bed sores develop as a result of constant pressure on certain parts of the body, most commonly the bony areas such as shoulder blades, hips, heels and elbows . Other factors that contribute to bedsores include excessive moisture from sweating and friction from rubbing against the lower sheet.

Additionally, memory foam has been widely used in hospitals and rehabilitation centers across the country for recovery from debilitating injuries, major surgeries and for long term care because it prevents any bed sores or other problems among people who must stay in one position for a long time to heal.

The perfect cushion is a preventive of “bed sores” which do not necessarily come from a bed but rather the chaffing of skin against a surface, and with inactivity of the body, the blood flow to these skin surfaces are slowed and result in skin lesions.

Check the person’s body for bed sores and other injuries and ask questions if anything seems suspicious. If the behavior continues, file a complaint and find another facility.

The heat retaining properties of the foam makes pain more bearable for a patient suffering from back injuries. Thus memory foam is also used in medical treatments of patients developing “bed sores” and for people suffering from postural problems. Besides the use of memory foam in a mattress, nowadays it is also used in pillows, positional sleep aids, office furniture, automobile seat padding, footwear, infant cribs, car seats, wheel chair cushions, computer carrying cases and many more.

Motion Sickness

At one point in our lives, we all tend to experience a little bit of motion sickness. Whether it’s getting a severe headache from reading too long in a car while it’s moving or whether we’re sitting on a small plane that’s going through some serious turbulence, motion sickness tends to affect everyone to some degree. Motion sickness (aka: kinetosis) is defined by Wikipedia as a condition in which there is a disagreement between what you visually perceive as moving versus what the vestibular system perceives is moving.

Importance of the Vestibular System

Your vestibular system is your balance system- it’s what is in charge of your equilibrium. The vestibular system plays an integral role in motion sickness and is made up of your auditory system. It is comprised of two main components: the semicircular canal system (which detects rotational movements) and the otoliths (which indicate linear translations). This system then sends signals to your brain that control your equilibrium (ex: being able to sit up straight). So, in a nutshell, it’s really important in how we are able to function on a day-to-day basis.

Symptoms of Motion Sickness

Most people who are suffering from this sickness suffer from symptoms that include: dizziness, nausea, fatigue and vomiting. Vomiting is one of the more extreme side effects of someone experiencing motion sickness. Vomiting usually occurs when the person cannot resolve whatever motion is causing the nausea. It has been hypothesized in the past that vomiting evolved over time as a sort of defense mechanism against neurotoxins in the brain. Vomiting was a way for the brain to get rid of the unwanted toxins.

Though it is an unpleasant feeling/experience, motion sickness is a great example of how our bodies process things internally. Motion sickness results when the human brain receives conflicting messages from the body. For example, if you were to put a group of people in a closed in cabin on a boat in rough seas, chances are that a great portion of those people, if not all, would experience some degree of motion sickness. We can feel the boat moving up and down and from side to side, but we cannot see anything. Therefore, what we feel versus what we see is interpreted by our brain in a confusing manner, resulting in us feeling dizzy or nauseous.

Motion sickness can occur wherever there is motion. The different types of this sickness include: airsickness, sea-sickness, simulation sickness, space sickness and car sickness.

Preventing Motion Sickness

The effects of motion sickness can be lessened or avoided all together by gazing towards the horizon (if you are in a moving car for example). This will help re-orient a person’s equilibrium, by providing a visual reaffirmation of motion (Wikipedia). If you are a passenger while you are in a moving vehicle, closing your eyes and taking a nap will also help alleviate motion sickness. If these methods don’t work, there are over the counter drugs as well as prescription drugs to counteract the side effects of this sickness.
